Is it legal to own a ROM of a game from a compilation?

You're saying that they've always been illegal because of the Virtual Console? These roms weren't made recently. People have had these for decades. You can't just say something is illegal now because there is a new technology that was made to take advantage of them. Fair use man, fair use.noiseredux wrote: That would be implying that the ROMs of those games were made in the past 3 years.

Ok so are you saying I should delete my rom collections that I've had for about 10 years because of the Virtual Console that came out 2-3 years ago? They are just cashing in on emulation. Something that was looked down upon by them since it started. Stop feeding big corporations while they milk everything they've made for it's last penny.

so then you agree that I didn't say "always"? Ok good.
And when I brought up the VC, I was responding to you saying that you can not (right now) go out and buy a new copy of Super Mario Bros 3.

The ROMs were extracted from a hard copy. Not from a digital download. So essentially it's not even the same product or source. Nintendo is just doing what we have been doing for years. They just own the rights to republish and sell emulated video games. Having your own collection of ROM files from hard copies over a <30 year span for personal use should not be a problem. Not everyone owns a Wii you know. I'm not going to give some random guy on Ebay my money for a hard copy since it doesn't help anyone but him.noiseredux wrote:so then you agree that I didn't say "always"? Ok good.

but Nintendo owns the rights to the games and can legally sell them. That guy on ebay owns the physical cartridge, so he has the right to legally sell it. I'm not sure why this seems odd to you.Nullface wrote: The ROMs were extracted from a hard copy. Not from a digital download. So essentially it's not even the same product or source. how so? I was just saying I don't get why you think it's odd that Nintendo would want to capitalize on a product that they own.Nullface wrote: Way to disregard my entire post.
