Is it worth it connecting the PSP or DS to wi-fi

Post by Ivo »

I can't imagine either of them providing a comfortable browsing / checking e-mail solution. Am I wrong?

Is it worth the bother reading up on how to set it up, and would you be happy to only one of these devices (and not take a laptop with you) if you were going away for a week and had to check your mail for the duration on one of these?

Your opinions on this topic are welcomed...
Ivo.

I've used both for checking email in the past. As long as you have a mobile mail site to use (m.mail.yahoo.com for instance) you should be fine.

For mail? If you've got no other way to do that, it might be worth it. It's not like it takes a lot of effort to set it up.

On the other hand, my DS flash adaptor card can take software updates (boot fixes, etc) over wifi, and that's well worth getting it connected.

Well if you can connect the PSP online, you can go on the PlayStation Network store. The browsing interface for the PSP is OK, and if you can use it and in a pinch it comes through. I think the iPod Touch/iPhone has the best internet interface, but it works. I carry a laptop with me almost everywhere and there generally isnt a good enough internet connection to get my PSP or iPod online. That's the main problem. You have to have a really good internet connection to take advantage of the online stuff.

I don't know about the PSP but connecting my DS to a public network is hit or miss. I've stayed at alot of motels and 75% of the time the DS has problems connecting. I'm only able to connect seamlessly if the network is completely unsecured and the signal is strong enough.
Maybe to connect all I have to do is manually configure the DS WiFi settings, but asking the night clerk for details about their network settings just so I can maybe play Clubhouse Games online always seems like more of a hassle than it's worth. And i've noticed that I have more luck at the low budget motels, my DS never connects at Holiday Inn Express or Hampton.
