Yeah, that was scary. I was in Akita prefecture when NK was firing those missles. Akita is right across the water from NK. People were geniuenly scared and there were anti-missle defense systems in place and tanks on the streets. I really thought shit was about to go down, good thing it didn't!

Meh, it won't happen. It's just political stuff, going to war would be stupid for both of them even if you don't take international politics into account.

Concerning North Korea, the problems to me are: 1) that they have loads of cannons pointed to Seoul so any kind of intervention would be very dangerous. 2) We don't know if their leaders are crazy or just faking it

Actually, I'd add a major third problem: North Korea has support from China, which is apparently attempting to lay claim to certain archaeological finds in the region so they can both continue asserting control over the regime and potentially grab the territory should the nation collapse.

And then there's North Korea's possession of nuclear arms, which is a technology they've expressed a willingness to sell to others or help develop in other nations, while also threatening their usage on nations they dislike. Following their usage in WWII, the United States has continuously maintained a policy not to use nuclear arms first(since we haven't had a nuclear war, I'm assuming the Soviets had a similar policy), and though the world has come close to nuclear war in several instances (the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Six-Day War being two examples that could have ended in retaliatory nuclear strikes), we've been lucky that it hasn't. But while the US was in an ideological struggle with the Soviet Union, neither side was stupid enough to open that can of worms.

Honestly, Kim Jong-il strikes me as crazy enough to do it, if only because his ego is that bloated. North Korean propaganda has included claims of things like him having an invisible telephone to discuss strategy with the coach of the NK soccer team...this guy's crazy. Or at least his PR team is.

They teach that he controls the weather in NK's public schools, or so I've read.

Nuclear Deterrence. Russia has nuclear weapons and Japan is enjoys the US umbrella of extended deterrence.

War between developed nations is a memory. Unless someone (stupidly) created a missile defense system that is unbeatable, wars will continue to only be fought by poorer nations (often times by proxy for wealthier nations) indefinitely.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Well yeah, but that's nothing new to history.
