The one piece of advice I'd give is to try and use tricks to make the icon look correct from far away. For example, You can look at a well done GBA icon:

Even though the details are inaccurate, when viewed from a distance the mind completes those details intuitively if given something familiar to work with. This is in my opinion the most difficult task in projects like this, because it requires you to make something that you can understand rather than actually see. I've tried a couple of these, but it is a difficult endeavor and I've never been perfectly satisfied with my work. Patience is key when it comes to things like this, enough time and effort will get results if you're half decent at it.

I don't have any programs on this computer to make the background transparent but I can do it tomorrow for you if you want when I get onto my computer.

per chance is that not saved as a png file? it looks a little blurred... not tryin to be picky, buuuuutttt... perhaps you could save it as a png to have it cleaned up? thanks and sorry if i'm a pain in the ass. :) cheers
