At this point, just get a digital movie collection. It makes the most sense.

I work for a number of visual effects studios, and they're making most things in 2K (2048×1080 anamorphic) and 4K (4096 x 2160 anamorphic) res these days.

8K and IMAX is being used for the new Batman film (part of the previous one was this resolution, but the latest will be entirely that res).

4K will most likely be the next consumer resolution, but it will be a fair while off yet. TV manufacturers will want to maximise their return on current gen stuff for a while yet.

I dont see it as a fad. Take a look at the AF-100. Thats the videocamera version of the Lumix Gh1. It comes out this year and EVERY person in the industry I know wants them. Why? Because if you use SDI and a real lens it captures video at a level comparable to the Genesis (at a half the price). AND, more importantly, using the Micro 4/3rds standard means the sensor is roughly the same as that on a 35mm film camera. Meaning those 50k lenses that most ops and dps have just became useful again. I got to play around with one of these with a lens used to shoot part of the tv show I Spy and it convinced me that I needed one.

Resolution is an interesting thing to research with gaming. A lot of those "1080p" Xbox 360 titles aren't actually 1080p.
Yeah, NES outputs 256x256 on PAL, 256x256 on NTSC but you only see 256x240 (248x240 if they cut the left 8 pixels via PPU output settings) with the other 16 pixels being overscan.

And yes, they are mostly 720P/I and some are scalled up 720P to 1080. Quite crappy. But who really cares? MW2,Halo, and many more both look great. I think the textures and 3D environment mean more then the resolution now.

Digital, on physical media. Perfectly rippable of course, even if it upsets the M(PA)AFIA.

The AF-100 looks cool but how much better would it be if they ditched the cmos? I don't really see the AF-100 as part of the dslr that shoots video fad since it's a fully functioning video camera. I'm not arguing that the potential of dslr sensors and lenses isn't there, the AF-100 and sony's new camera (can't remember the name) are both steps in the right direction but they're brought down by the cost saving measure of using cmos vs ccd. The prosumer camera makers have always played games in limiting technology, and I'm pretty sure they know if they made something like the AF-100 with a CCD it would hurt their higher end cameras.

I think cmos could be the future, but they have to work out all the issues with it. IMO buying a cmos camera right now is like paying money to be a guinea pig.

I obviously meant a collection stored on a hard drive rather than on physical media. There's no need to get smart about it.
