Where can I attach an LED light to an SNES jr?

I read a guide somewhere on the internet that told mentioned attaching it to the power regulator that is attached to the heatsink. There's 3 legs that come out from that power regulator. I press the wires up against the two outer legs it to test it with a 220ohm to red LED light, and turned the power on and it worked, then it blew the fuse. I fixed that, but I'd still like to attach an LED light. Does anyone know where a good place inside the SNES jr would be?

Yeah, it's very annoying that the SNES mini doesn't have a power light. Makes it easy to leave it powered on when the TV is off. I was gonna add an LED to mine before it broke.

First what you gotta do is pick out your LED, you need to know how many volts the LED requires. I got some LEDs from Radio Shack once that had a built in resistor, making it easy to hook it up to a range of voltage.

But get a voltage meter and find any location on the motherboard that puts out the voltage you need for the LED. You might not find 3v, but 5v should be common I would think. So if you find a location on the mobo that is 5v, then you can just wire your LED to that and it should be fine without a resistor. Let's say you want to use a 5v source with a 3v LED, then you'll need a resistor. There's LED resistor calculators online that work really well. I'm not sure how many volts you get from a leg on the voltage regulator, it's been a while since I've tinkered with this.

I'm guessing the 3 legged power regulator you refer to is a 7805 which converts incoming voltage (7+ volts) into 5v to feed the console. I would expect this, as although I don't have a SNES jr, the SNES and NES for that matter does this.

The 7805 has 3 pins, the one under the "7" of the "7805" is the voltage input, the middle pin is ground and the pin under the "5" is the 5v output.

This would explain why the fuse went as it must have kicked in to stop damage being done by connecting the outer pins together - before it fried your board.

So, if you want to use an LED, you will need to know the rating in volts of the LED, and the current it needs, eg if it wants 3.4v at 20mA (ie 0.02A), the calculation would be thus (using the "5" pin on the 7805, ie 5v):

( 5 - 3.4 ) / 0.02 ; in other words an 80 ohm resistor. You don't need the resistor to be bang on but if it is a lot different, will burn out the LED much faster.

Connect the (+) LED terminal to the 780"5" and the (-) LED terminal to ground (any grounding on the board, including the middle 7805 pin). The resistor needs to be positioned between the positive voltage current and the LED, not between the LED and ground.

thanks a lot. the right most leg is in fact 5volts. the leftmost leg is 11 volts though. So I had the LED hooked up to two positive sides. No wonder it blew. I assumed the LED has a positive and negative side, but when I looked at it, neither side was marked.

When LEDs are new, the longer leg is positive. If it's already been trimmed, this image will help you determine which is which.

Usually one leg on the LED is suppose to be slightly longer than the other indicating which is which.

You can connect the negative to any ground point, I just put it there because it was convenient for me. Hope this helps. I've had that led in there for quite a while and haven't had any problems.

Ok, so I'm not the best at soldering but at least it works. I have been practicing and that was a long time ago that I put in that light. Sorry for trying to help another member.
