Maybe a new display technology is in order? Holograms for one, although those are still far away. Note how long it's taken digital media to catch up with the clarity of 35mm film for instance. Perhaps all these pixels and compression algorithms have been the wrong way to go concerning video projection.

SD, HD, FUD.. marketing bullshit. As previously mentioned what matters is the source. I cringe at those upscaled old music videos on Youtube for instance. No point in capturing PAL or NTSC at such high resolutions, or worse upscaling them using software when encoding.

People who make tvs are always coming out with something new suround sound,telly text,3d ect to try and convince you to buy the latest tv.I would think within the next five years they will come up with a way to make the picture evan better.

I also have no intrest in 3d tv.

Obviously if 72" tvs ever became the norm, resolutions of 2160p could be used or something, like with the movie theater analogy, but I don't really see that happening. 50" is probably a little higher than the average tv set and at that size anything over 1080p is pretty much pointless.

I think the future is OLED tvs. Not higher resolution, just more vivid with better contrast, deeper blacks, and wider field of view like classic CRTs.

Consumer industries are seriously lacking imagination and/or creativity. Reminds me when the automobiles industry peaked in the 1970s, but I won't be making any mundane car analogies here

...depending on how close you sit, anyway. That's why it's fairly common for computer monitors to support resolutions higher than 1080p despite generally being smaller in size.

That would be a good direction to go. I seem to be in the minority here for wanting 3D.

Really? I always choose HD if it's an option. I don't know why you wouldn't unless you have a poor internet connection.

We should expect something like SUPER HD in the next 10 years, and maybe some new optical media.

I think the biggest screen we are looking at for home use is a 60inch , I don't know any one and never heard someone with a bigger screen than that, if he wants a bigger screen he might as well build a full theater

For one, few people have cameras that can shoot video in 1080p, and few people exist that want to watch Youtube videos in HD.

I disagree with the first point. Any professional still photographer has a camera capable of shooting 1080p. Most DSLRs, if not all, can shoot at 1080p. Heck most indy films are shot on the Canon 5d Mark II. If thats not enough, a hacked Lumix GH1 can shoot full 1080p at 4:2:0 color and at 50mbps (unhacked does 1080i at 20mbps). The Gh1 goes for about $700 - which I admit is not an impulse buy for most people but the option is there. Heck on my coffee table right now there are four cameras that can shoot full 1080p, granted Im an exception to the rule since I owned film cameras for a long time. I miss my Arriflex D20s, but they went on to a better place.

What you should be looking for 1080p is things like the rumored upgrade to the FlipHD camera. The rumors Ive heard are 34 mbps true 1080p in a $300 camera. Granted Im probably going to be buying a Lumix AF100 next year, but thats because I can use movie lenses on it.
