Re: Somewhat sobering article about a disillusioned collector
that's cool tho, nothing wrong with that. makes me feel pretty good about my one milk crate of games and another of controllers plus the consoles seen below... i don't need a vault... but, damn, another one bites the dust. reminds me of the time i saw a drummer unloading his elaborate drum kit into a pawn shop (i, being a fellow musician) and i said "what happened" to which he replies "no time" with his girlfriend looking cross beside him (i don't know them, but i blame her) but i digress. disillusionment is usually a good thing even if it makes others sad. now! what will i boot up tomorrow after work while my gf is at work?? hehheh

To each their own. I want everyone to be happy, no matter how it must be attained. Although, now I'm a bit inspired to trim some fat off my collection. Very nice read though. Thanks for posting.

That is a sobering article, thanks for sharing.
I have at times felt kind of like this guy, although I feel I am more accomplished in life at 30 than he seemed to think he was at 28. I don't feel games are "holding me back" as much as sometimes "slowing me down." For me, my game collecting/playing habit actually has come into its own after getting a lot of those big "adult" steps in life out of the way, but at times I spend more time with my hobby than I know I should...often at the expense of things that need to get done around the house, for work, etc.
I learned a long time ago that when I get into a hobby - be it baseball cards, concert swapping, etc. - I go in full force. With other hobbies I have eventually grown tired or disillusioned after a while and I suspect at some point in my life the same thing will happen with my current heavy involvement in game collecting/playing...I'll move on to something else and adjust to much more "normal" levels of interest in gaming.

I don't think I could ever sell back my collection. I'd want my kids to play them or whatever.

Bah! Quitter!
I've done the same thing a few times before. Friends needed an escape and I figured I'd had my fun with them so I gave away my SNES collection, my N64 collection, my Saturn collection and my PS1 collection. I've since acquired new copies of the best stuff, and I can go over to their houses (those that are still around) to play them whenever I want. Funny thing is, now that I actually have a decent income, all the stuff I worked so hard to collect years ago is amazingly easy to get, and even at a good deal usually.

How many people sold their collections only to start collecting all over again?
Looks like this gamer still has the bug, will regret his mistake and losing the Retro stuff later.

I'm keeping all my stuff until I die. Let the kids EBay it all when I'm gone.Bitmob wrote:Video games continue to have a place in my life. I own a PlayStation 3 that works triple duty as a gaming platform/DVD player/Netflix-streaming device. I still have a few games for it and will probably buy more before the system has run its course. The culture still fascinates me and I revel in news that emerges from trade expos and exclusive magazine articles. I trade PS3 trophy-hunting stories with co-workers daily.

Re: Somewhat sobering article about a disillusioned collector
The writer was so unflinchingly honest about how he effectively wasted the best years of his life on video games. When he wrote about playing FFVII instead of going to his prom, I didn't know whether to laugh or weep.
This is definitely an extreme case, so he did a great job moving on. The gap between this most of us and this guy is the same as the gap between a guy who likes a drink now and then and the guy who's a full-blown alcoholic.

I definitely have way too many games, but it in no way controls me or holds me back. Hell, I have no time for games anymore and just end up playing a few hours on Sat or Sun.
Re: Somewhat sobering article about a disillusioned collector
I can totally relate to this article and I'm only 25. I also have a friend who is in a similar situation and selling almost all of his Star Wars and other assorted action figures. Sometimes purging things can have a positive effect, especially if you want to bring new and interesting things into your life. I don't think I'll be trading in my games anytime soon, but I agree in terms of putting it into perspective with my life goals.
Gaming is a hobby and a past time for me, not the reason I get up every morning though.
