I love Pt IV for the Famicom. Hands down the best game in the series.

I plan on playing through the TG-16 remake. It's probably the one I have played the least.

that looks like the GameCube version except...weird.

I'm playing the GBA version, which is an emulation of the NES game part of the Famicom Mini series in Japan. So far I can only make it to level 2-1.

so far my thoughts on Adventure Island are that I really like the game, but it's surprisingly hard. No continues! And it's not forgiving at all. You kind of need to run a lot so you don't run out of time, but running makes you slide into/off of things. Though I think it forces you to master it due to replays. After playing for about an hour and a half, I can already speed run my ass through 1-1 without losing the skateboard. I will say that 1-3 gets a bit hard in the ice area if you don't have the skateboard, but that's mostly because it gets so slow and time consuming when you're trying to be careful which means the clock dwindles a lot there. The first boss is easy, but so far I haven't made it out of of 2-1.

Yes, that was my impression too. Definitely a game that requires practice, and I think that's where it gets most of its play value from. I played the SMS version last night, I think it offered me continues but I didn't use any. I only played long enough to see what it was like, didn't even get to the first boss.

It's pretty good so far. I found a hidden area by grabbing a handbag that took me up into the clouds with a bunch of floating hearts that I collected, but they didn't seem to do anything. Grabbing another handbag warped me ahead in the level. Not sure what that was all about. I'll have to find a manual.

It's just for points. There is a hidden doll in each level (sometimes they're in the open, sometimes you need to hit seemingly arbritrary places with hammers) to collect. If you get all dolls on the first 8 worlds there's apparently a 9th, but I never made it there. The dolls can be tricky to find.

Do points get you extra lives or anything useful?
