I'd strongly recommend it if you can find a good deal on it. The model 1 (IMO) is the best/most reliable model. There's more than enough good games to keep you busy, and most of them aren't very expensive, and as has been mentioned you can always burn games for it.
I think the7k put it best, it really is like a standalone Sega CD, as far as game selection. I'd say the Sega CD definitely has a larger selection of better games, but it's not a huge difference. One interesting thing, at least to me, is that it has an awesome controller. You'd never expect it based on the system's reputation, but I absolutely love the model 1 3DO controller. Do some googling and you'll find the better games for the system, I think you'll dig it.

Re: Is the 3DO worth buying?
ohh if you never even heard of it i wouldnt get it. Fortunate of me i heard of it back then and tried to convince my dad to get it for me, and back then it was fairly expensive machine. But anways he told me that playstation is coming out and i should get that instead.
For me at that time had less patient so i was kinda upset i didnt get a 3do , thanks to my dad i was very happy to have a psx when it did come out and what became of it afterward.
only reason to get a 3do is prob for those who own, or played it before . If you gonna get any cd base console in the mid 90's i would skip 3do and get a sega saturn or psx if you dont already own one.

Re: Is the 3DO worth buying?
3DO came at a wierd time in gaming. There are some quality gems on the system, and a ton of stinkers. All CD based platforms were selling stinkers tho. FMV was in, and it was terrible.
The FZ-10 is the most durable model. not the FZ-1. but with anything, it's debated. FZ-10 has less moving parts... let's put it that way.
I can still turn on my 3DO and get a good play in, but that's because i remember the era it was around.
Shockwave 2 is great- one of my favorite easter egg ending scenes too.
Fifa-6 player classic 2d fifa? yes please....
Return Fire- the original
Gex-the original again.
Captain Quazar
Alone in the Dark - nostaligic for me.
Road Rash - fast
Novastorm
some good puzzlers on there too. I'd have to thumb through my catalog to remember them all, but i really enjoy the 3DO from time to time.
oh yeah, and Total Eclipse

Re: Is the 3DO worth buying?
I use to own a Model 1 3DO, and it was a fun system. I bought it off of eBay many years ago, and I enjoyed it and I agree with the thought that it was a standalone Sega CD, which to me is a good thing, it might have been a dud, but I have fond memories of my Genesis(Model 1)+Sega CD (Model 2)+32X set up (and all the wires it required!lol)
I bought it because when it first came out, It was too expensive for me at the time and seeing the demo of Madden (with those realistic looking helmets) made me wish I could have one...LOL
for the price, it's well worth it as it's fun...just know that alot of the games are available on other systems as well...there are some exclusives.

Re: Is the 3DO worth buying?
Return Fire and the expansion make the 3DO worth STILL having. Game is so much fun as a party game. I know Return Fire was also released on PS1, but it somehow wasn't as good, and they didn't have the expansion maps either. Return Fire 2 for PC was horrible also, which is a shame, as I thought this could have been a great series.
Other than that, there are various other games worthy as well, but also a lot of bad ones of course. Luckily most games are still dirt cheap. Go for it.
Also I recommend the Goldstar or FZ10 systems over the first front loader because of internal memory much larger for game saves.

Goldstar systems are crap. They were built cheaply and because of that not all games work right. Panasonic is the best way to go, whichever version you choose.

my goldstar system never gave me a problem playing real games, but they also don't play CDRs like the Panasonic machines do. Also I prefer the 2nd revision (FZ10) controllers to any of them.

Re: Is the 3DO worth buying?
I bought mine locally from a Racketboy member earlier this year and it is kinda neat I guess. Watch the demo discs and you will see this thing was truly supposed to be some kind of revolution with home entertainment/education/utility all in one device. I did a lot of research on what are the supposed "best" games for the system and it seemed to me at the time that the system was sort of a beta for the Playstation since a lot of those "best" games ended up on the Playstation (and to a lesser extent Saturn). Here are some of the games I remember people recommending:
The Horde
Return Fire
Loaded
Super Street Fighter 2
Alone in the Dark
Star Control 2
Road Rash
Need for Speed
If you want to collect for it you're going to have to head online. I've been collecting old games since about 1998 and I have almost never seen 3DO games for sale in the wild.

Re: Is the 3DO worth buying?
The thing with the 3DO is to first, get a good console, there were several manufacturers making 3DOs back then, generally the Panasonic models are the best, they created it in the first place.
From there, there are plenty of good games, personally I prefer some games on 3DO, games like Dragons Lair and Space Ace, whether you like FMV or not, look great, and better then other ports at the time, and games like Super Street Fighter 2, will be quite a bit better then on other consoles at the time as well.
But like the Sega CD and the CD-i, there is a load of shovelware, so watch out...
