Is the 3DO worth buying?

Post by Nullface »

There's a member selling one for $50. I hadn't even heard of the system until recently so the games would be all be new to me. What are the ups and downs of this system?

Many people hate it but I think it is a great little console. The games don't look especially wonderful but there are some really fun titles. A lot of them are ports and the exclusives are few and far between but if you aren't extremely picky than you can have a lot of fun with the 3DO. It is certainly worth $50.

If you're a fan of the series, the 3DO has the best console port of the first Myst game. There is also a nice port of The Incredible Machine which is very fun.

Also, there is no copy protection on the games so they are easily backed-up or downloaded and burned.

If you are a system collector go ahead. which version is being sold to you? there are big differences.

I cant say I can recommend it, I do own one with some games, but it has yet to impress me.

I cant afford the popular games, but as a good point, I think the 3DO has no copy protection.

I have a hard time trying to find original games as well. I dont really buy online, so that may not be a problem for you. Or just burn them.

I hope this helps you

The 3DO is basically like if the Sega CD was a standalone console. Much like the Sega CD, there are many great games on it - but that's not what people remember it for. People remember the incredibly lame 'movie' games on it.

So, just ignore the movie games (or, as I plan to do, get them for novelty value) and you'll have a pretty decent console. Maybe not great, but I'd say it's the best console out there that didn't have a big name like Nintendo, Atari, Sega, etc., footing the bill. (Well, except the Neo Geo...)
