Sonic Fan-Made Games

Post by racketboy »

After my "How Sega Can Bring Sonic Back To His Glory" piece showed up on Digg the other day, I've had a few people mention that there have been some good fan-made games out there.

Anybody know of some?

There was a website somewhere called "sonic fan-game headquarters".
I'll look and see if I can find it.

EDIT: http://sfghq.emulationzone.org/

I use to be a regular at SFGHQ years ago, and even had a crack at making fan games myself, although I wasn't very good at it. Some of the best ones:

Sonic: Time Attacked
Sonic XG
Retro Sonic

I couldn't get Retro Sonic yet, but I think I got XG, and I played through Time Attacked today.

Of TA I can say it's a good effort, but it has some significant problems. I bet it's still much better than the other Sonic fan games around. I actually played that weird Master System or Game Gear Sonic game with the crappy CG look and it's about on par with that, perhaps. For a fan game it's not bad, but it's not like there are only fan games to play.

Retro Sonic looks good and I started talking to the developer briefly.
He agreed to do an interview, but I never heard back from him again...

GagaMan, you probably played through all of them. There seems to be different demos of Sonic XG - I found demo 1 (starts with Super Sonic) and 5 (has more levels, clearly). Should we be looking for anything in particular there, or only the latest one?

Just go with whatever the latest version is, although XG keeps evolving into a bigger project with each version. I heard Retro Sonic and XG were eventually going to merge into one big project, and I remember there was another fan game (cant remember it s name) that also merged with XG a while back.

To be honest, after trying those 3, I'd only say Retro Sonic is actually "good". The others are more complete and may have better level design etc., but Retro is the only one that comes close to "feeling" right.
