Any Retro Gaming Stores/Arcades in San Francisco?

Post by racketboy »

So between my searches on Google and our very own store directory, I don't see any good stops in the city of San Francisco?

I know there is that one arcade at Fisherman's Wharf. I've been there a number of times. It wasn't bad the last time I was there, but was wondering if there was anything else...

I'm looking forward to hitting up the arcade in Santa Cruz again. I'm hoping to score a video interview/tour of that arcade as it is incredible. I left a message with the Boardwalk's PR department today and waiting to hear back.

I live in SC actually, and I'd be glad to help you out with anything you need about the Boardwalk. I worked for the big food company on the Boardwalk (Whiting's Food Inc) for about 3 years, and I know a few people that work for Seaside company, which is the main company that runs the boardwalk, including the arcade. I've spent many, many hours in that arcade, both at work and for fun, and it's always great.

Just shoot me a PM if you need any assistance at all with it RB, I'd be stoked to help out the community here a bit!

If you're going to be in the East Bay at all, Phoenix Games is a pretty nice shop. Most games are too expensive, but it is a good, clean independent shop with pleasant customer service. All of which is too rare when it comes to indie video game places, in my experience. When I went in they had stock on everything from the current consoles to the Odyssey 2. Pretty good selections of everything too, not just a few scattered pre-NES things.

In the back they have a few pinballs and arcade cabs including a well-refurbished Tempest & Donkey Kong.

The Metreon has a cool arcade in San Francisco on the top floor with lots of different arcade games like Time Crisis, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, DDR, Crusin' Exotica, and many more.

Address:
101 4th Street
San Francisco, CA 94103

Feel free to send a PM if you need more info. I know the SF Bay Area pretty well.

I would also check out the new Playstation HQ store that opened up recently about a month or so ago while in the area. It is located on Market Street. 8)

Oh yeah, I forgot about the Metreon. I stopped in there a couple years ago, but I don't think I peeked in the arcade. It hasn't died off too much? I know the Metreon, in general, isn't what it used to be.

I lived in Vacaville for three years and used to visit on occassion.

The Metreon is definitely much different compared to several years ago. The Playstation store on the first floor is gone which is disappointing and some other shops aren't around anymore as well. It still has a nice movie theatre and arcade at least.

Yeah, the Metreon used to belong to Sony, and they had a pretty cool Playstation store in there. Do a google image search of "Metreon Playstation store" to see what it looked like.

In San Rafael, there's an arcade called Starbase. Not the biggest arcade in the world, but authentically old-school since it's been around since 1983 (i think). Hard to find that true, dark arcade experience anymore. I'm going to be on that side of the bay on Thursday and I'm definitely stopping by because their website shows they now have a cocktail Tempest. Never seen one of those before. It's for sale ($1045), but also available for play. Too bad they got rid of Roadblasters.
