Instead of holding a controller, what if we made the character more that looks like he's in a game -- the most logical old-school genre that has a character holding something that would indicate a game genre would be a gun like a run-n-gun.

Thoughts?

As much as I'd like to have a mascot, maybe it's not the best place to spend energy.
Maybe a more iconic logo would be better...
I feel the logo as-is is iconic enough. I don't think we need a new one or a mascot period.
I just realized that the main page doesn't have the JSR image on it - is the "old mascot" in use anywhere on the main site currently?

Nah -- the closest thing would be my avatar.
A couple years ago, I had an image of a screen with Jet Grind Radio on it....

I remember -- I just NOW noticed it was missing. Has the traffic increased/decreased since you got rid of the JSR mascot? Do you think a mascot added much to the site overall? I agree that the logo - as is - is pretty iconic. It shows up at the top of every page and has a novel font scheme...

I already replied but since a few other people mentioned they liked the text based logo, I'd like to add that I REALLY like the text based logo.

Well, traffic has only grown since then, but I don't think it had anything to do with it ;)
But I think I see the point you're trying to make....

Personally I think that the website could do with another name. That's just me, I understand that Racketboy was chosen since it was Nick's nickname and it seemed like a good choice at the time, but I feel that this website is way bigger than just one person now. Not to demean you personally, but I think that this website going through a rebrand is the absolute best course of action right now.

I understand. And actually, that's what I was kinda hoping to do with the mascot -- kinda try to have it be a more general name than just mine (and maybe have the mascot be "racketboy")

But changing the domain name would totally get rid of all my Google juice, which is a great deal of the site traffic and revenue.

that's crazy talk. Seriously. This site IS Racketboy. That's what it's called. That's what we know it as. And changing it would be.... weird.

I second this. I know I don't have many posts but I have frequented for a long time just to read and re-read the articles. Having it be called something else just feels... Wrong.

I'm not saying that, I'm saying that rebrands aren't the worst thing ever. Plenty of successful websites have rebranded themselves, something that appeals to a wider range of customers. I believe that a strong brand is most important for growth at this stage of the website's life. This could mean a strong mascot (something I don't believe is necessary or even possible considering the name) or a rebrand.
