I like it! I agree with some previous comments that it would be better if simplified a bit before being pixelated, and the headphones should be more prominent.
I'm thinking that if he simplified and thickened the lines it'd look a lot more videogame-sprite-like. Check out what PixelTao did to the NES Megaman sprite.

As long as someone adds flames or an explosion in some form or fashion, you have my support.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

And a case of beer? Or am I asking for too much?

What are you going to do with a picture of beer?

Take one look at it and realize that Racketboy.com is the place for me.

...but I'd settle for flames / explosions.

D'oh. Okay, so even sans flames, boobs, and beer it's still a pretty good design. I just wish it was possible to keep it a little closer to Jet Set Radio without risking a visit from Sega's well-dressed law team.

I'm also not crazy about the mascot idea. It's your site, though. If you did insist on a mascot, I have two suggestions:

1. The hero from Adventure on the Atari VCS. I'm sure you'll be able to get away with using him.

2. An animal mascot with an attitude. I know it sounds like a joke, but I think it would come closest to fitting the style and focus of the site.

*EDIT* Also, I don't think he should be holding a controller.
