Problems with Identity Theft Possibly

Post by WrathOskvro »

So uhm..I don't know how in the hell this happened, but so far I've been called by 4 different insurance companies today saying that I inquired about a Life Insurance quote, or Auto Insurance quote. Even my own insurance company called me asking about it. I talked to them about it and they said that apparently it said that I'm 26 years old and own a Nissan Sentra...wrong. I'm 19 and own a Chevy Malibu. Also, I know my way around enough not to get phished. Another time, this other company called (21st Century if you're curious) and the guy actually refused to tell me where he got my information from. I said "where did you get this information, how did you get my name and number". His response "Uh..the internet". I said to him "Uh okay, from WHERE on the internet, I know it goes through email." and he goes "uh..I dunno..just..the internet" and I said "Okay so you found my name and number, and possibly some other things too and it was requested from somewhere obviously, yet you have no idea where you got my information from...yeah okay"

That call didn't really go anywhere..but yeah point being, does anyone know what to do? I called my bank and they suggested me get a free credit report with our government website, to make sure that nobody's tampering with it. So, I did that. No info came back at all. Mainly because I am not with any credit card companies to begin with. The closest thing to that is my Visa debit card.

Does anyone know what I can do to get to the bottom of this?

I would say get Lifelock or something for the time being.

Everytime someone applies for sometime tied to your social, lifelock will call you immediately to confirm the application. If it's not you applying for it, they can be caught there and then (if it's in person). One case I heard where it worked as advertised was when some scammer/frauder attempted to open a car loan and buy a car with someone elses identify. The sales person was notified that Lifelock will now call the person in question, and after 2-3 minutes, the person in his office didn't get a call, so the police were informed and he was apprehended.
If you aren't having a good time, why are you playing?

Could someone be playing a joke on you by feeding your info to various websites so you get inundated with sales calls?

I remember when I was younger, I did that on a friend by saying that he's interested in new windows (New Pro Windows harassed him). Another, I had the Jehovah Witnesses come to his house. Yeah, that was bad.

Lifelock not necessary, another fee you end up paying.
Most credit card companies give protections already.

As for the calls, I just simply state put me on your do not call list.
Gets rid of a lot of them from calling back.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I've gotten them off my back finally. Won't know for sure until tomorrow though.

@gtmtnbiker: Nah, I'm positive it's not a joke.

The reason why I think it's a prank is why would a thief be trying to get a life insurance or auto insurance using your info? Credit cards, yes. But insurance?

I dunno, maybe it's innocuous in that they can verify your SS# and see if it gets reported... if not, then they think they can go in for the kill? I honestly don't know much about ID theft, but I could see that as sound reasoning.

One of the companies said they got it through email so if I were dumb enough to actually go through with it, they would verify it back to whatever email address that person is using, which would probably contain some personal information of mine. Just a hunch.

I wonder if checking your credit report will help finding out if someone has been submitting applications under your name. You can get one copy for free per year, from each credit bureau. Meaning, you can check it every four months for free.

You can also put a freeze on your credit, meaning no one would be able to open a new line of credit without you finding out first.

I'd take this seriously.

I tried that actually and nothing came up. Every place told me that it basically had nothing to show or it couldn't be shown. :\
