I say try it.
No, The multi-channel input shuts off all internal decoding and the DSP. Basically it turns the reciever into solely an amplifier and it compensates fro the lack of audio in the other channels with either loud as hell volume or wonky channel separation. Also, it all depends on your current setup, the speaker configuration you use and the quality of said speakers.

For example in my bedroom I've got a cheap $50 pair of Sony's on an older Pioneer receiver that while small manage to fill the room with some warm bassy sound at the expense of fidelity. In the living room on the other hand I'm running a Sony center, Acoustic Research 2AX's as my fronts, and Bose 101's as my rears with a Sony subwoofer.

The result is a very "New England" (aka flat and clear without the sub turned on) sound with a nice baritone center, and some either very crass and rough or gentle and behaved bass at the flip of a switch. It makes for lots of tweaking that can be done to tailor the sound to what the system is being used for at the moment.

If you don't have a lot of flexibility on either the sound's source or from the receiver itself the result is typically clashy sound with muffled bass and highs that are squealy.

In the end all you need is one of these:

Wow, that is a really bad-ass receiver. For $5500 MSRP, I would hope so.

I'm kind of leaning towards getting some sort of component/rca switcher. If I was going to hook up only the xbox, then I would consider getting the HD adapter. But I do want to hook up the xbox, wii, and gamecube to this TV. Thanks for all the advice.

EDIT: On second thought, maybe I should get the XBOX HD adapter in order to get the 5.1 sound.

I'm looking at pictures of the XBOX HD AV Pack and I see that it has the 3 component jacks and the 2 analog rca audio jacks. Where is the digital optical jack on the adapter? Is it on the other side? Or is at the end?

It's at the end next to the white/left analog audio jack.

I have one of the regular Advanced AV packs which features only S-Video, composite and the optical on it is fantastic, later on I got the second version of the advanced AV pack which was a component cable itself with an optical jack on the connector that plugged into the back of the console. Both versions are equally good on the optical audio front, but I'd go for the first version which is the dongle box as you can use your own cables to connect the system to the TV.

I put a bid of $20.89 on this one and was surprised that I was beaten. The winning bid was $33 + shipping. Crazy. After my bid was topped a couple of days ago, I did a buy-it-now for the xbox adapter for $13 shipped.

So I can find a set of cheap component cable for $8-10 more and I'm all set. Not sure why the other auction went so high. Go figure.

Of course if you have a spare component R/Y/W one lying around it works too as long as you keep straight what color is which while snaking it through the birds nest of other wires.

For one cable, shipping is a killer. $7 for 12ft cable, $6 for shipping. I got mine from Amazon (Cables to go) for $8 with free super saver shipping.

Still monoprice is pretty good, better than rat shack.
