psx or orginal playstation?

Post by xdanxx »

Im in the market for a PS1 since they are so cheap, but my question is which is better quality the newer slimmer PSX version of it, or the older fater version of ps1? I figured newer isn't always better since ive been through multiple xbox's but my orginal nes is still running strong. Anyone have any opinions on this matter? thanks

Go with the final model of the fat PS1, SCPH-9001. I've had quite a few models, as have my friends, and this is the one that has lasted me the longest and given me no issues. Its missing the RCA jacks, cheat device port, and one other port I forget, but no one really used those anyway. The slim obviously doesn't have them either. I admit the slim is a visually stunning piece of hardware, maybe even my favorite console ever, but it loses it's luster when it just stops turning on one day.

The slim PSone is quite possibly the cutest console ever designed. The old Playstation model looks like a toilet.

All I heard from psone (as they were actually called) were problems, specially from modded ones. Same thing could be said of the slim ps2. Seems Sony went cheap on the little ones. And if you feel they are cheap buy both!

You just made me remember the real PSX:

I never had a problem with the PSone. The older model PSX always crapped out on me. Works fantastically as a CD player, though.

You probably have reasons for wanting a PS1 (like hardware collecting) but I'd have to recommend just getting a PS2. They're pretty cheap used, and they play all PS1 games via bc hardware, not emulation. Just a suggestion ...

PS2 is a damn good option, but I've noticed some games just dont quite look right, even when the texture and loading options are left at default. Like Front Mission 3 just seems...its hard to really figure out the difference, but there's something wrong. Probably nothing you'd ever notice if you didn't just recently play it on PS1. However games like Chrono Cross get massive frame rate boosts. I haven't tried it in years, but I remember spells in that game that would bring the game down to 5fps, and then when played on my friend's ps2, it held 20-30fps. I never hear anyone ever mentioning framerate boosts and I really would like to investigate this further.

I can only use my own experience here. I loved that little machine. I took perfect care of it and I have snapshots of it after death to prove it. It looked brand new still. It just decided to stop receiving power one day. I had the official LCD screen for it to, and had a blast playing through Arc the Lad on it. Yes I used the power supply that the LCD came with. I believe it uses more power. It may have actually killed the machine for all I know, but again, it was official.

PS1 = $15
PS2 = $80-100
I can understand wanting an original playstation, there's all kind of good rpgs and fighters, not to mention the plethora of other games you can get cheaply and easily.
