Your characters have a limited life if you don't logon to them every 90 days. After that, it becomes a crapshoot if you can access them. Basically the character name goes up for grabs so if someone else makes a character with that name you can't get it back.

There is entirely too much duping / botting etc that goes on that make it rather annoying to play with anybody that isn't a friend.

That's why you don't play on Bnet or with random people.

Unfortunately you are right on that. I hear there are some pretty kickass mods, I'd be up for one of those doing coop online. I just cannot wait until D3 arrives.

I don't have time to play right now, but a few months ago I was playing the Median XL mod. I would recommend it over original Diablo 2. I especially liked the new challenges, the tiered item system, and the cube recipes.

Median XL was the one I couldn't think of. I may give that a shot, never did but it seemed like a really awesome total conversion.
