HELP Please! I need to hook my Gamecube up!!

Post by l0whit07 »

I can't figure out what the yellow, red and white cables mean!?!?!?! No just playing, not that ignorant about this stuff ;).

On to the real problem though. I only have space for 1 console and I'm probably pushing it with that, but I need something! I picked the Cube because it's awesome selection, small and GB player. I don't have a TV to hook it up to. I do have a laptop with VGA and HDMI slots. I've read a bunch of things that say you can and can't use a laptop screen as a monitor. I've read you can do it with video capture equipment but I worry about how well that would function.

I would love to just hook it up to my laptop if possible. If not I do have a 19' LCD Monitor I could get my hands on, that only has VGA/DVI.

So my options look like:

1. Laptop
2. Monitor
3. Portable Cube Screen/TV

I've heard bad things about the portable screens for the cube. TV is almost not even an option. I have to put all of my electronics into a locker every morning, so moving a TV into a locker every day would suck.

So I'm hoping to hear some of your alls expert opinions on what I should do and what equipment I'll need to do it. I have both Component and Composite cables to work with. If I'm able to use my Laptop or a Monitor, those will obviously need converted.

Any help at all would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I would think that a video capture device would be your best bet; in a best-case scenario, you can find a Component-to-USB capture device. The main issue here is that you need a decent laptop to run the capture software. If you have a laptop made in the fast few years, it should do the trick, but I just thought I should let you know, beforehand. Also, there are apparently some very good portable GC screens out there. One in particular that I have seen uses the Digital Video Out connection for 480p video, so I can imagine that the image quality is quite good.

I've heard video capture can be laggy.

I have a GameCube VGA adapter. Made by Innovations. I'd suggest that.

I also have one of those GCN travel screens. It's ok, but not ideal for RPG's or anything text heavy, or anything with small bullets, etc.

In yr situation, I"d highly suggest a VGA adapter.

This is the same one I have, it's $30 BIN with free shipping.

Knock off capture card like this EasyCap would be a cheap option: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5707

Yea, that site is legit. 9 dollars, free shipping for that. However, if you do go that option be forewarned that they are a pain in the ass to get working. It seems like every computer has a different way of getting them set up that you have to figure out. Even if you can't get it set up, it was only 9 dollars and you may eventually be able to use it for something.

Also, before buying VGA adapters, check to see if the VGA or DVI ports on your laptop aren't OUT ports and not IN ports. Usually laptops have an out port to connect to a second/bigger monitor, I've never seen any with IN ports to use the screen as a monitor.

I don't think you're going to get satisfactory results. An input capture via USB will probably be laggy but that's the only way you're going to get anything inbound onto a laptop screen.

I think this is the best solution. Looks like S-Video to VGA, using the non digital port. Not 480p but cheaper then converting a cube digital cable. I just ordered one my self, thanks Noise !

I am now thinking about that drunken N64 squirrel on my VGA CRT.

yes, you are correct -- it's modified S-Video.
