The zip drive was unreleased, it was to be used to have some extra space for save files and downloadable stuff.

There was a VCD card for the Saturn, I believe, though it was only released in Japan.

There was a ram expansion cartridge released for Saturn only in Japan. It allowed for greater amounts of sprites and animations in 2D games and an upgraded texture quality in 3D games. These features only appeared in games compatible with the cartridge. There are ram cartridges in the US, but they are released with multi-region capabilities so that the extra ram is used on Japanese games.

Saturn add ons. Well besides the RAM cart and VCD card like Funk, E & The Apprentice talk about, there are SEVERAL add ons for the thing.

VCD card
2M Ram cart
4M Ram cart
Midi plugin box (used for hooking a keyboard up to the Saturn)
mouse
keyboard
modem
printer
floppy drive
Karaoke
GPS antenae (came built in for the Hi-Saturn released by Hitachi, it had a LCD screen, GPS, and was able to be hooked up in your car... weird thing, and goes for a hefty price tag. I had one, but got rid of it... damn it)

Just to name a few

Most of Sega's consoles got ridiculous amounts of add-ons and modified consoles. The genesis even had a version that was used with fitness machinery to check you heart rate and play some stupid game while working out. The SegaCD also had a ton of crap... almost all the Sega consoles had some karaoke add on.

My theory is they did this to set up releases on VC/XBLA/PSN starting this fall.
