I didn't have interest in this since I only kind of enjoyed the first game and this one was pretty badly panned...what is so great about it?

It's Monster Hunter with guns... and mechs. It just clicked with me. One of my favorite 3rd person shooters of all time is Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex for PS2 - a game that also reviewed poorly. Lost Planet 2 plays similar to GitS: SAC. The real draw is the ability to play through the entire game via 4 player co-op. If alone the campaign can be played with AI teammates who do a commendable job of backing you up, but they will not win objectives for you.

I think a lot of the reviewers were just whining because they are dough boy new gen gamers that can't take the heat. LP2 can be very unforgiving. I would say it comes very close to 16 bit difficulty even on easy setting. Much of the difficulty comes from the game being very Japanese. Funny how we never had a problem with this during the reign of the SNES and Genesis when most games were Japanese. There is a very heavy-handed yin-yang element to game play. Stay on your toes or you get shot... fall asleep at the wheel and it can mean instant death, regardless of the amount of health you have. Characters are deceptively mobile in that you can really move around, but there are accompanying animations that could leave you vulnerable. When you start to work out invincibility frames from specific maneuvers and begin to figure out when best to avoid jumping around like a Mario brother, the game really opens up.

The co-op aspect of the game is one that I have wanted to see for a long time. Most missions require absolute team work. Hog the thermal energy, and your teammates die. If they die, the entire team's battle meter goes down. If it reaches zero everyone's game is over. The final bit in the 3rd mission/stage/chapter/whatever is an absolute ballet in co-op game design. It's a shame that nearly every reviewer has failed to realize this.

I know I sound like a gushing fanboy, and maybe I am. But don't take my word for it. Go download the co-op demo on PSN. The servers still accept sessions from it so you won't have any trouble finding people join.

edit: Oh, and Amazon dropped the price to $20 last weekend. Another good incentive to get your feet wet.

Really? Wow. I tried the demo you talked about and thought it was a lot of fun but didn't consider it worth the $60 price tag. If it's dropped that much I think I'll check it out.

Awesome, glad you like it. If you pick it up let me know. I'm always looking for more co-op mates.

I'm curious. How long is the games single player? I heard it was kinda short so I assume 6-8 hours. Also, I know the game has plenty of replay value from the multiplayer but is there and replay value from the single player?

I'm not sure how long single player is as I've only owned the game for a week and I'm still going through it. I would assume it would take most around 6-8 hours to complete.

Replay value?

-Unlocking weapons and special items is done via a slot machine. You never know what you're going to get. You could unlock one of the best weapons in the game or you could unlock a silly emote. You collect credits by picking up boxes enemies drop. These allow you to play the slots.

-Through the first play through you are forced to stick with the characters that are involved in that part of the story. The characters level up depending on how well you do during the stages. As you level up different costume parts and weapons become available to you. It's impossible to max level everyone the first time around so you will need to play through the game again with different characters to achieve this.

-And there is the competitive multiplayer. It's pretty fun, though not quite as well developed as the co-op campaign. As stated in my other post, when you figure out hit-stun situations and invincibility frames, this mode will really open up for you. Even then, I know plenty of people who never touched competitive multiplayer in Gears of War and they were very satisfied with the game as a whole.

I have put almost 10 hours into LP2 since my purchase on Saturday last week. If the game clicks with you, I would assume you'll be playing it a lot. I have a friend who purchased the game on day one and he still has no trouble firing up a game and playing when I request. When Sharky gets the game later this week (he took advantage of the Amazon deal), we will be playing through the campaign again. There were a lot of set pieces I would like to revisit and tackle in different ways.
