I Need A New Laptop
I'm getting a new laptop, and I need some opinions. I currently have an HP Pavillion, and one of the biggest problems I have with it is that it overheats often. I used to have a Toshiba Satellite, and it never overheated. I need something powerful [something with an i5 or i7 processor], but unless someone can vouch that newer HP laptops don't have heat issues, I'll probably want to stay away from that brand. Anybody have any suggestions?

How long have you had it? Do you put it on the carpet or other soft surface often? Is it full of dust and just needs a clean?

My mom bought herself a really nice HP gaming laptop. I swear that thing could heat up Antarctica... She even bought a USB fan for underneath it. I would not recommend an HP if you have a problem with overheating computers...

I have a MacBook Pro 15" and could not recommend it enough. Unless you dont have a ton of money. Also it depends how serious you are into gaming. Well you could dual boot the Mac, which I heard is really easy and works really well. There are quite a few emulators and stuff that work really nice, and slowly more games are coming on Steam. It's a really well built computer IMO.

I have an HP now that I got just this past April or June. It's been great. It's not my main computer, but I do use it often. Haven't had any problems with it yet. This is what I got:

Re: I Need A New Laptop
my mrs used to have an HP laptop. She said it was slow and turned itself off for a while and it could boil a bucket of water.
I had a look at it.
There wasn't much dust in it, in fact very little so that wasn't the problem.
I pulled off the heatsink.
the heatsink had its thermal pad on it and the thermal pad still had the plastic wrapper bit on it!
removing the tape I put it back together processor ran 20 degrees cooler at idle! Removed it again and used decent thermal paste and no matter what you did it never went above 55 degrees. The fan also turned out to be a 2 stage fan it was on full all the time previously afterwards it rarely went to the higher speed.
I have seen a few like this since.

Re: I Need A New Laptop
Just last month we all chipped in and got my sister a new Laptop for her birthday. Since I'm the computer guy in the family, I was the one that picked it out. I again went with an HP, and it seemed pretty decent when I examined it and was setting it up. It's still too soon to tell I guess, since it's only a month old at this point, but it seemed like a pretty decent laptop.

You say you need something powerful and mention processor. What about graphics cards?
If you don't need a top-of-the-line graphics card, I recommend getting a refurbished Dell Latitude from the Dell Outlet. Despite the general quality of their consumer-grade machines, their business class side of the house is really great. The build quality is up there, and support is good, and the outlet prices let you get a business-class machine at consumer-grade prices.
