mega cd powerboard

So i got a mega CD model1 with a model 1 megadrive from a guy a while ago, he said it was working when he last used it but it had been a while etc etc. Finally got round to trying it out as I never actually had electrical sockets that both wall warts will fit in at the same time, and it's dead. Unsurprising really since the guy had fried it as you can see.

Now, I'm not 100% on this but i think it was a capacitor that exploded. I also think that the exploded bit was there to filter noise from the dc in, and isn't that vital.

I'm not sure but from what's discussed in this thread it seems that just bridging the circuit around the exploded component should fix it. What do you reckon?

Reading over that thread, I think the power filter they were talking about was the black box (inductor) on the other side. I wouldn't try just bridging a capacitor, better to find one similar and replace it. See if there's a number on the C23 capacitor, C22 is probably the same. Looks like the solder pads are big enough to accommodate a larger capacitor, so you shouldn't have to solder SMD parts.

Yes, C22 and 23 are the same and you could solder between the pins sticking out either end of where the surface mount one was if you get the same value, perhaps in a bigger one. If that cap roasted, the black block on the other side might have a problem too. You don't want ot just bridge it as the capacitor served a function a wire wouldn't.

The problem is; I have no idea what value the capacitor that blew was. From what I can see of the circuit, in order for it to work properly it would need to match the remaining un-fried one in order to still reduce the noise and getting it wrong would probably be worse than having no capacitance there.

The big black block on the back i think is a coil and probably might not be harmed

Hmm, there's no marking on it other than it being brown. I don't know if surface mount caps use color codes or not for their values as I see tan, brown, and dark brown.

To update, I tried bridging that component out but to no avail, the mega cd is still dead. I'll wait until one with a dead cd unit comes up.
