I disagree lightly. Granted I am just now playing (seriously) this game for the first time and because of my dislike for the modern games - I like this one.
I think the main difference is total 3d control. I don't really like the feel of Sonic's continual movement and me just moving left and right of the new games. So the full 3d movement of Sonic is why I am enjoying SA - for its time its not a bad 3d platformer.

I feel like the levels in SA1 were thoughtfully crafted. They snake around, with branching paths and plenty of opportunity for either charging straight ahead, or looking around and exploring. They are interesting environments to be in. Sonic Heroes and everything after it have levels that feel a bit... cookie cutter. There is little of interest about them (which makes the scavenger hunt missions even more boring and frustrating) and they all tend to have a very "on rails" feel. As much as I liked SA2, I feel that this trend began (appropriately enough) with the long "rail grinding" sequences in the later Sonic and Shadow levels. The games become more challenging, but too often the difficulty feels cheap (blind jumps etc.) It just feels like there was more of the old Sega left in SA1 and 2--1 especially. By Sonic 2007, it's like they just weren't feeling the love for what they were doing anymore.

I completely agree with flamepanther. I just can't understand how anyone can think SA2 is better, let alone SO much better than Sonic Adventure 1.

The level design in the first game is just so much superior in my opinion. I just have to agree with everything flamepanther has said in all his posts. The levels in SA2 didn't really do it so much for me.

Because taste is different? At least that is what I say to myself, and accept that some people like SA1 better.

But SA2 IS much better than 1. The gameplay is more streamlined, sonic and shadow don't get stuck so much, or randomly run off the nearest cliff, the camera is just as bad, but the stages have been designed to compensate for that.

And that is just the Sonic stages.

Tails/Eggman stages are much better than the Gamma stages, and so are the Knuckles stages in SA2 than the Knuckles stages in SA1.

Plus the final boss is way more epic, and overall the game has a better soundtrack.

...although they do sometimes fall through the floor or clip through solid objects. Sometimes it's not even random--It would have been nice if I hadn't had to wait for SA2 Battle on the Gamecube to be able to complete the final stage instead of mysteriously falling to my doom on the Dreamcast version I paid good money for.

I can honestly say I've never had Sonic "randomly" run off a cliff in SA1 on the Dreamcast, the PC, or the Gamecube. I've read the XBLA and PSN versions have painfully hair-trigger controls though. That was my number one issue that made Sonic 2007 totally unplayable for me, so if it's even half as bad as that was, then I could understand your complaint.

Luckily the GC version of SA2 is significantly less buggy. Everything is pretty much fine in the Knuckles/Rouge stages, and when you just want to plow through the Sonic/Shadow and Tails/Eggman stages.

Not so luckily, you can still run into a lot of weirdness and buggy clipping when you want to explore the (non-Knuckles/Rouge) levels looking for chao and rare animals rather than just completing them normally. That's also when the inferiority of the SA2 camera becomes evident. It would be just fine the way it is if the levels were meant to only be played linearly and didn't have anything hidden that you're supposed to find--but they do, and hunting them down often reveals how broken the game still is even in its revised form.

I'm aware of that :P I'm not meaning to come across as an ass, but I don't have to end every sentence with "in my opinion" right?

I just don't understand it personally, but I understand you and many others feel differently.

Might be worth me mentioning now though that I've only played the DC version of SA2 and had no idea the GC version was an improvement. That said, I doubt I'd feel any different, because I still find the level design on the first much more imaginative and fun to play.

My 2 1/2 year old boy likes SA2 better then SA. The only reason is because he can only play the first stage in SA after that he gets lost. In SA2 he can just pick which team to play and continue playing every stage.
