i think you really have to take into account the amount of continues given, lives, etc.

a game like ghost n goblins is hard as nails. but with the unlimited continues given, anybody with enough time and patience will eventually beat it.

so my vote does not include ghost n goblins or ninja gaiden or any other game that gives you unlimited continues.

off the top of my head, my vote goes towards battletoads. but i am sure there are plenty more that gives you limited continues.
if you took a shit, please put it back

If you think the original is tough, try getting past Dracula and his THREE forms at the end of Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse.
I actually accomplished this when I was 15, without game genie, and to this day it stands as my single greatest video game accomplishment! Seriously, my 33,000 gamerscore on XBox Live is nothing compared to how proud I was when I beat CV3...

Also, what about Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde? There were so many games like that, where if you rented or borrowed the game and didn't have the manual, you had no clue as to what the hell to do!

Aside from the obvious ones being pointed out, I'd add Friday the 13th in there. I want to slam my head into the wall and throw my controllers at the television just THINKING about that stupid game. Wrath of the Black Manta is up there on my list too.

I'll add one I haven't seen mentioned to the list:

In college I wanted to jokingly beat this fairly awful game. I managed to beat it... once, which apparently isn't enough. I think I read you have to beat it 4 times in a row in order to get the proper ending? Am I wrong there?

At any rate, the game is a complete mystery as to how to accomplish your quest. By jumping in a certain way while on a certain block you receive abilities to perform other tasks that would otherwise be impossible. Maybe there are other ways too but I can't recall all the details. I just know that beating it the once was enough to pull your hair out and doing it again 3 more times seemed futile.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Maybe I'm just not that good at video games, but holy crap, this game is hard. Like a million enemies at a time and if you don't have the turtle with the whip, you're screwed.
Gaming accomplishments:
Nibbler (marathon): 251,169,160 / Nibbler (one life): 5,263,360 (WR)
Donkey Kong: 423,100 [L12-1] (150th place as of 2019-01-15)
Super Smash Bros. (N64): Ranked top 5 in Wisconsin from Q1 2016 to Q2 2017
Shrek SuperSlam: won largest tournament in game's history (Shrekfest 2018)
