Rest In Peace, Sony Walkman

Post by Luke »

Full story here.

It's a sad day today, as Sony has nixed the manufacturing of the Walkman. As a kid my first tape player was gigantic, the kind that had an aluminum grate over the speaker, a handle so you could walk with it carrying it vertically, and one big ass orange button for recording. I use to hold the beast up next to my television speakers so I could record the music being played on MTV, and I would also record my favorite movies then listen to the tapes when I got into bed. I still have the tapes from when I recorded Fright Night on two tapes.

Then I was old enough for middle school, and those tape players were heavily frowned upon. So my friends would bust my chops about how old my tape player was, until I saved up lawn mowing money for months and shoved this bad boy in their face:

This guy is still beautiful to my eyes. Bright yellow, newly designed headphones, auto-reverse, and I think to a certain extent it was water resistant. It was also kind of a revolution that you entered the tape the opposite way you were use to, and that the sports Walkman had that extra plastic flap that went around the tape. My preferred way to listen to Appetite for Destruction will more than likely always be on a sports Walkman.

So, any other Walkman stories to share, or was I the only one obsessed with it?

Mine died years ago. I too remember recording things off the tv and radio.
I used to make mixtapes for the busride to summer camp. I liked it way better than my discman.

Not a Sony but a Besser. I was really intrigued by the novelty of this one. Portable "Walkman" that drops into mini boombox amplified speaker base. Real unique are the FM and AM cassettes. Entire radio tuner on a cassette shaped PCB, unfortunately didn't buy the AM cassette PCB. I added RCA AUX audio input jacks to the front to serve as computer speakers. Been dropped a couple of times, but the radio and regular cassette still works! Now where is that Deep Purple Machine Head tape.

This is the model I have. I still use it daily. I am lucky to have a friend that restores and services them so any time I have a problem he takes care of it. Also, if he has to order a part, I get to take one of his 20 or so other Walkmans (all pre-1990 and sound AMAZING!)

Seriously, I wouldn't trade this for any iPod. I even own a Zune 8 but it just sits on a shelf in favor of taking my walkman. (The Zune is essentially for in-car use anyway so I don't have to take a ton of tapes with me for a long drive)

In the future, could you resize the image to be smaller so it doesn't overwhelm the screen? I uploaded the picture to tinypic.com.

used to have one when I was really little, between 4 and 6. Before I could read my Grandma had recorded several Dr. Seuss books on casettes, set up like those read-along books but cheaper. Then once I could read I gave it to my younger brother, who as soon as he was old enough to use them destroyed the tapes by pulling out the reel inside and ripping it apart.

I still have that walkman in my house somewhere though. It's really kiddy-looking, bright red and blue, but it's there.

Most of my memories of Walkman's in the 80's and 90's are of how pissed i'd get when I broke one every few years, and how long it would take to save up for a new one.

Hats off to Sony for making it so long. The walkman was one of the coolest things I ever owned as a kid before getting a portable CD player in 2001.

This makes me sad. I was kind of a lonely kid and the walkman was almost a friend in a way. I must have eaten my way through at least four of them before I finally got a portable CD player...but then I was so scared of breaking the CD player that I kept using the walkman.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
