Yeah, I was only comparing shooters that appear on both consoles. The Saturn equivalents are virtually always cheaper. As for the overall library... well, on the Japanese side the PS1 is probably quite a bit more expensive overall. If you are hardcore into shoot 'em ups (whatever that means!), then you are definitely into the import scene. You have to be!

On the western side of things, it would most definitely be the PS1 being cheaper.

My favourite shoot 'em up game? Right now it is probably Gradius Gaiden. I can't explain why, but I find myself playing it more than Gradius V. Maybe I just really like selecting the order I can power-up? I also find myself playing Final Soldier more than the other PCE Soldier games (I'm including Blazing Lazers in there). I really don't know why that's the case, but it is.

Since we are on the topic of shmups, which handheld has the best shmups?

I would assume one of the GBs just because they had the most games.

The PSP has some great collections and so gets my vote...and of course you could count stuff like the Nomad and Turbo Express...

But I'd have to say the GBA (with GB/GBC library) might have the best selection of stand-alone shmups: http://www.rfgeneration.com/blogs/noiseredux/shmups/

I think it's largely a matter of taste. I'd say that PS2, Saturn, and PCE are pretty equal for volume and quality of games, but their offerings are all different.

pretty much anywhere there's a good shmup, i'll play it. obviously the PC Engine, Saturn, Dreamcast, Genesis, PS2, PSX, and 360 are great shooter platforms, but i also really enjoy a lot of NES / Famicom shooters, like Gun-Nac and Recca! the Genesis also has some favorites.

The PSP, definitely. It has access to AMAZING PS1 and PC Engine shoot 'em ups via PSN, plus there are some great compilations on it by Konami, Capcom and Hudson on it like Gradius Portable, Salamander Portable, Parodius Portable, Twinbee Portable, a couple of Capcom collections that have the 194X games and Varth, a newer Star Soldier game as well as a collection with the three PCE Soldier games and also Star Parodier.

The Gameboy and Gameboy Advance do have a lot of shoot 'em ups, but it cannot match the quality of the PSP.
