Help me choose my next TV

Post by kgcarini »

I've been saving my money for a new TV for over a year. It will be my first HD TV that will also be used for gaming. I've done a lot of research, but I'm stuck on which one I should buy. I want a 46 in LED LCD TV. These are two that I want, but am not sure which one I should get...

Insignia™ 46" Class / 1080p / 120Hz / LED-LCD HDTV

or

Toshiba 46UX600U LCD NetTV with LED Edge Lighting

I really wanted a backlit LED which the Insignia is; however, I'm kinda scared to get a store brand. The Toshiba has more inputs and features (I could care less about the NetTV), but it is an edgelit LED.

Go at it and help me figure out which one I should get.
Thanks! :D

Tv for the money is still IMO samsung, I work in vendor installations and functionality for best buy so I'm always installing the new models. I went plasma and I'm sooooo happy I did. I watch lots of sports, it looks great for games, and bluray looks amazing. Plasma has true blacks the other tv's cant produce for a much less price.

My philosophy is go bigger than you think you want. I've had a 46 for a few years and of course now I want something bigger (as well as 1080p)

My opinion is that the "luxury" tvs have features that will always become outdated within a few years, but size is never outdated.

58 inches for $1400!!

I paid $1500 for my 46" rear projection 720p sony in 2006. I'm not unhappy with the quality, HD is HD and it looks good, but that tv up there is tempting.

CNET is a good place to start looking if you havent already.

Remember that LED is still an LCD, it really depends on the model. A conventianl LCD can often have better picture quality than an LED.

If you want a big LED at a decent price try this model

How much are you looking to spend? What is your ideal size.

If you want big then Plasma is a better choice in some regards because of the bang for your buck.

For instance Best Buy has a 50 inch plasma for 899.99

I'd agree on the brand. I'd agree on the type as well, but my samsung LCD is so nice I don't see a reason to shoot that route.

If you want to support local businesses (I always try my local shops first) see if they'll price match with say, newegg. Otherwise, buy online. Get free shipping if you can. Do at least 2 hours research with cnet as mentioned, you'll be happy you did.

I'm in a similar position. I have a small LCD that ive had for about 3 years now, and want to have a big screen for the living room (40-46 inch)

This is my current tv
Samsung LN26A450

I like it for a small 720p tv, and im going to make it my monitor when i get the new tv.

Ive been looking at going one of two routes.

LCD

Samsung LN40C630 for 809 at Best Buy

LG42LD550 849.99 at Best Buy

or

Plasma

Panasonic TC-P42U2 for 649.99 at Best Buy

Samsung PN50C550G1F for 899.99 at Best Buy

Now i have to buy the tv at best buy so i can finance it for a while (I am an educator after all). Along the same lines id like to spend under a grand on the tv total.

What do you guys think?

Panasonic has improved their name quality the last couple years, but I would encourage you to go larger than you think. For a long time I was set on a 46", but looking back I am extremely satisfied about my decision to get a 50". Get the samsung plasma for $899. I love my tv and its an excellent price with very crisp 1080p quality.

Are there any 46 plasma that you would recommend. I only have a small apt so 50 is kinda pushing it at size for me.

I took a look on the website, but as far as I can remember Best Buy only has a Panasonic in a 46", but its not 1080 so I wouldn't waste the money. I have my 50" in my apartment bedroom and contrary to first thought, its not oversized at all. My ex did a double take at first but she quickly changed her opinion. Watching bluray on a screen that size has no equal. I know Samsung does not manufacture a plasma below 50" that produces 1080p. So if you have no option then pick up one of the 42" Panasonics that are 1080 equipped for around $650, otherwise make the room and get the Samsung. I hope that gives you some ideas.
