shmup platform of choice?

Post by gennss »

What is your shmup platform of choice?

I've played them on various systems, but for some reason, I just like the Dreamcast for my shmups. (Even when comparing ports, I lean towards DC)

I would say Dreamcast, because of the ease of pirating hard to find or imported games. Sure it's easy to play imports on Saturn, but alot of the good shmups are really expensive for Saturn.
NES, SNES, PS1, N64, DC, PS2, GCN, Wii, PS3, 360, GB, GBC, GBA, GBA SP, PSP 3000, and 3DS XL

My instinct says dreamcast. But to be honest the 360 controller has a really accurate analog stick which whilst not traditional is actually really nice to use. Not to mention that shmups look better in HD :D

1. PS2 (Japanese console, of course. A lot of the good 16/32-bit shmups have been ported here)
2. Saturn (Hands down, the best pure shmup console. This cannot be argued reasonably.)
3. PS1
4. PC Engine Duo (any PC Engine equipped with Super CD capabilities)
5. Dreamcast
*. X-Box 360 (looks like this system is making a series run at being a decent shoot 'em up system... IF you count X-Box Live)

You really need to get into the Japanese import scene. Once you start getting into Saturn and PC Engine/TG-16 shmups, you will never go back.

*Having a Saturn as your go to shoot 'em up system makes the PS1 almost redundant, as the majority of good shooters on the PS1 are also on the Saturn with only a few exceptions (Gradius Gaiden and Einhander being the most notable, IMO). The Saturn controller is absolutely perfect, unless you need an arcade stick.

I think you really need both, as some ports are superior on one console or the other. In particular, the PS1 is much better for the DonPachi games. This site has a great article here: http://www.racketboy.com/retro/2006/02/ ... ation.html
