N64 wrestling games

Post by RCBH928 »

I was playing WCW/NWO revenge on the N64, and as I was looking at the graphics(maybe the current HD wrestling games affected this) I was like...PUKE at the graphics

It looks retarded, I mean the characters faces are like pasted on the 3D model it looks stupid , and the 3D model looks broken with the arms and legs some how are floating on their own not part of the body.

problem is back in the day I remember playing this and thinking "WOOOAAHH coooll graphics" "Huge 3D models" , "This is life like!" ...

but again I was younger...

any one was old enough to have enough brain cells to analyze the graphics of these games back in '98? Were they cool? Were they amazing? Or they sucked all along?
I can't believe humanity was that retarded back then, '98 is not that old after all.

and while we are on the topic, any one ever enjoyed wrestling games while NOT being a wrestling fan in the first place? Like did you ever get excited over a wrestling game release and decided to buy it over some big title?
I always bought wrestling games and thought these are COOL and ton of fun, but thats because I am a wrestling fan and always wanted to play "in character" of other wrestlers.

Well, the impressive thing about the N64 at the time was it's ability to display "cleaner-looking 3D images" than the PS1 or Saturn. So it helped make the games a little more enjoyable to play
"Welcome to the circus of values!"

Currently Playing: Crysis (360), Destiny demo (PS3), Roadblasters (MAME)

WCW, WCW Vs NWO, and WF No Mercy (Thinks that's all of em)
Amazing games.

The graphics seemed fine at the time. I do remember when No mercy came out with the intros we were pretty blown away for some reason.

No matter how good or bad they look those games ate hundreds of my summer hours spent with friends.

It's not really fair to say humanity was retarded back then, and it kind of makes you sound like a dumb kid. When I was 13 or 14, I can remember watching videos of Turok 2 and saying the dinosaurs looked real, but the graphics are pretty hilarious by todays standards. Donkey Kong 64 was pretty much breath takingly beautiful at the time it came out, now the graphics look quite dated. The thing I'm getting at here is the standards of what constitutes good graphics changes over time. Good graphics is a relitive thing. Give it 12 years, and games that are coming out for Xbox 360 and PS3 today, will look just are dated and retarded as N64 games look to you now.

There was a few Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 (JP) and Wrestlemania 2000 both had this kind of slower style of gameplay there was also WCW vs The World on the PS1 the Kinnikuman games on GC/PS2 were also similar as were the Def Jam vendetta games from around the same time. They were all done by the same team at AKI Ithink they did Touken Retsuden 4 on the DC too.

I loved this style of grappler used to have awesome 4 player matches we'd even filled all the CAW slots with our own federation, mostly midgets and huge fat guys.

I remember the WCW/nWo graphics being looked upon as "cartoony" by magazines at the time, because of the chunky models and pasted-on faces. So it's not like they were being described as "realistic" or anything at the time.
The pasted-on faces are pretty funny. Nothing better than beating up the Blue Meanie, Scott Taylor or Brian Christopher while they have those stupid grins on their faces, or the Rock - who permenantly has one eyebrow raised!

i believe your talking about Wrestlemania 2000 here.

when i first bought WCW/NWO game years ago, i was blown away how it plays. the graphics i thought at that time could be better.

then came Wrestlemania 2000! it was finally great to use the WWF(E) guys with the WCW/NWO gameplay and improved graphics (but still not better). IMO this game is better than WWF Attitude.

Enters WWF No Mercy! This version improves the other two games in both presentation and creativity. I still play this game from time to time and creates current WWE/TNA superstars when i'm bored or got nothing to do. This is by far the best wrestling game i've played to date. They need to remake this game! AKI/THQ get to it!

The modding community has done some pretty great things with retexturing No Mercy.

Witness this TNA vs ROH mod for example:

Personally I always loved these games because they were so much fun to hack with an AR/Gameshark and mess with the textures/create new match types and stuff.

Hell, the N64 in general was great fun to hack.

Incidently (cheap plug) I'm selling the Xbox Def Jam FFNY which uses a revised version of the AKI engine seen in these games over in the auction part of the forum if anyone fancies playing something with slightly better graphics and similar gameplay.

yep. i think the best hack was called Summerslam Mod. but there are other hacks out there that are also cool (like the one above). sometimes i would combine those two hacks for the heck of it (roster wise)

yeah the wrestlers that I mentioned aren't from WCW/nWo but I own all three games and it kinda goes for all of them. I should have been more clear though.
The AKI wrestling games were far superior to the Acclaim ones (i.e. War Zone and Attitude). WWE Day of Reckoning and it's sequel used the same fighting system and had amazing graphics to boot, so definitely check them out if you like the AKI N64 games.
