Dreamcast Help - How do I convert to .cdi?

Post by Jonn »

I have the tracks and stuff of Space Channel 5 (J), and I want to burn it so I can play it on my Dreamcast, but I think I need it in .cdi format right? So how do I get it like that? Or if someone has the Japanese Space Channel 5 CDI already like that then that'd be a lot easier.

P.S Please please please help me if you know anything. Thank you. :)

Did you try and rip the disc yourself? Because it can't be done by conventional means. GD roms can't be read by a normal cd drive on a computer. You need either a broadband adapter (very rare/expensive) or a GD rom drive (no idea about that) and the know how.

If you downloaded it, what format is it? You can use alcohol or disc juggler to burn a game. Most are CDI files, but sometimes you get NG files (Nero), or Alcohol files (cue, img etc).

You can use virtual drives in order to create a cdi image by mounting the file(s) and then using disc juggler to create a new image.

You could probably find the game on http://snesorama.us/board/ though, and it would no dout be a CDI image.

I got it from that place, Snesorama.us. It's divided in 6 different files, three of which are .bin, 2 in RAW file, and 1 is GDI. It's titled track 1, track 2, track 3, etc... I don't know... I couldn't find the CDI format one of this game, only one that was like this.

It said to follow some ripping guide but the guide but some of it's steps were inconceivable so I skipped them and made compromises, but I did end up with a CDI file, but it was too large for burning to a CD-R (2GB). The file size in total is already too large for burning to a CD-R (1GB+). The thread it was in said it was a complete disc extraction or something.

If you need more info, please do ask. I really want this game (The Japanese version of Space Channel 5) and I can't find it already prepared for burning.

If it's a full GD-ROM image that's too large for a CD, you have some options:

-Rip or downsample videos and music until it's small enough to fit
-Find a way other than the CD/GD drive to get the data to the Dreamcast. I do not know if there's been a method developed for running it via a broadband adaptor, but there's a similar technique for PS2.
-Find a way to master actual GD-ROM discs--not likely
-Play it on an emulator that supports such an image
-Find a different release of the game.

Hmm. So how does one acquire the .cdi version of the games? Do I need some type of special hardware? Is there no way to make this into a .cdi?

Here are the file descriptions:

Space Channel 5 v1.001.gdi - GDI File - 1 KB
track01 - VLC media file (.bin) - 1,946 KB
track02 - RAW File - 1,696 KB
track03 - VLC media file (.bin) - 29,311 KB
track04 - RAW File - 1,523 KB
track05 - VLC media file (.bin) - 1,126,448 KB

hiya Jonn , i would recommend going with Tux's version of this game.

He has done multiple optimizations of it , the only thing his version is NTSC-US not JAP.

check some details of it here

Yeah, I already have the English one heh. I just want to play the Japanese one... I don't get why no one has it anywhere. This really stinks.

You'll have to either figure out where the multimedia files are inside the image and then re-encode them with lower bit rates (which is how people shrank the US version) and then re-build it as a bootable image, or convince someone who already knows how that it's worth their time.
