Multiplayer is always interesting. But how can we play old games online when the official servers have shut down ? Personally I would love to play Super Puzzle Fighter 2X against other people over the net.
There is already software such as "warp pipe" and "xlink kai". Basicly what they do is pipe traffic from LAN to WAN. Is there something like it for Sega consoles ?
And wouldn't it be great if there was some kind of "service" ala XBOX LIVE so we could easily find other people who wants to play the same game ?
Please, if you know of software or other hacks that makes some of these things possible, name them!

I thought the underground PSO servers were still around.
Haven't been to any in years, but I hear about them every once in awhile. Mozgus probably knows of some, if they still are up. He probably also knows about any issues with them (I've heard about massively hacked up accounts running on there).
[edit]
Never heard of this website, but with a simple google search I found pirate-server.com, a forum of several users who set up and manage underground servers for games...

I found one called "online consoles" the other day, I'm pretty sure that it's a very exclusive Dreamcast server.

Phantasy Star Online is still online, unofficially. This one has been up for years, but you pretty much need a BBA or a dial up connection still to play online. I've used it on GC and PC, it's good and very stable.
I think some other Dreamcast games are still online, but that is because the servers are hosted by third parties (like gamespy) and not Sega. I forget which games are online still though, I think like someone mentioned Quake III is still online, maybe Unreal Tournament is as well. The only problem really would be finding other people online to play with you.

Quake III Arena
Starlancer
4x4 Evolution
PSO v.1/2 (thru private servers in the community)
Maximum Pool
Sega Swirl
These are all of the Dreamcast games with functional online modes as of 2007; onlineconsoles.com is a big community site dedicated to Dreamcast online, as well as Gamecube and PS2 online gaming. I do know with PSO you require a PAL copy of the game and an invitation to play via the community's servers.
