Yellow Snes- Color removal/painting options?

Is this an ongoing problem that will be prevalent in other systems as well? I haven't noticed any change in my PSX's color yet but that would presumably be the next system to get a palette swap.

The yellowing is mostly due to oxidation of a fire retardant that's not in common use anymore. This is why some SNESs are still as white as the day they were made. It's really just a late 80s early 90s problem.

Ummm, no.

Bromine is still used in all manner of plastics. Trust me on this one, I see enough yellow and even at times brown Wii's and 360's at work every day.

Apparently you're right. There's some controversy about it because they're kind of toxic. May have to start washing my hands after using a controller.

Most of the SNESs I've seen recently have been grey as the day they were made. I know SNES yellowing is a widespread problem, but it didn't get all of them. If you want a nice-looking SNES, they're out there. Mine's nice and looks perfect grey.

i think if your gonna repaint , i at least try to make the new paint resemble the old. Just for nostaligic memories and also i think the originall color looks good.

They tracked down the problem at one time. It was the plastic being used at one of the factories (Mexico if I remember correctly). Sometimes the halves came from different factories and were assembled later. Hence the reason why some have just the top half or bottom half yellowed.

All ABS plastics will yellow eventually if exposed to enough UV light and oxygen. It's a huge problem in toy collecting as well. Normally this takes a long time though. I've seen it suggested that there was a batch of incorrectly balanced plastic (too much bromine?) used in the earlier SNES units, causing them to yellow much worse and much more quickly than normal.
