PS2 Slim won't read discs
My PS2 Slim has recently stopped reading discs. I don't know exactly when it happened, but in the time since I last played it I have moved it from home to university, so there's a chance it could have taken a knock.
I've tried it with all 3 PS2 discs I own, aswell as with a PS1 disc I had to hand, and it's not reading them at all. I'm not even getting a 'Reading Disc' message or a 'Disc could not be recognised' error, its not recognising them being there. I tried holding down the lid to see if it wasnt closing properly, and that didnt work. I also tried moving the laser to see if it wasnt moving properly, and its moving fine. Even so, the console just wont spin the discs.
Any advice? I'm not especially good with this stuff.
It's very annoying, it's the second of my consoles to break in the last month. The other was my CD-i, but im pretty sures thats just completely dead.

I'd bet it's just the laser finally died. I'm surprised yours lived until now. PS1 & PS2's lasers die all the time, they're such bad quality. I'd get a replacement if you want to revive it, but it's probably cheaper to just get another system.
One reason I'd be scared to get a PS3.....It'd probably die soon of lens failure.

Re: PS2 Slim won't read discs
I didn't know this was an issue! I've only had a PS2 since January, and it's not been my most played console. I'm kinda pissed off, because I personally felt that the £35 this thing costs was a bit much as it is ¬_¬.
I just want to play some FF XII

I just replaced my slim's laser last week - it gave out last month without warning.

Compatibility with USB loading isn't that great compared to Harddrive loading, but it does work - mostly just jotty fullscreen video.

Re: PS2 Slim won't read discs
My slimPS2 also has trouble reading discs. I found that if I clean the lens with rubbing alcohol, the disc works... until I try to play it a couple days later and have to do it over again. Something you might want to try before you go out and buy a new one.

Not exactly good advice. The PS2's from launch year until about early '03 had issues but all the subsequent models ESPECIALLY the slims were perfectly fine.3GenGames wrote:I'd bet it's just the laser finally died. The advice enderfall pointed out is what he should try first. Not to mention compressed air, or reseating the ribbon cable.

Re: PS2 Slim won't read discs
I've gotten 2 PS1's used and a PS2 that all head dead lenses, I'd call that pretty crappy. My original is still fine, but I do expect it to die eventually. Crap lasers, they will die sooner or later....

Have you ever tried cleaning them or reseating the ribbon cables?3GenGames wrote:I've gotten 2 PS1's used and a PS2 that all head dead lenses, I'd call that pretty crappy. My original is still fine, but I do expect it to die eventually. Crap lasers, they will die sooner or later....
I've never in my years of collecting come across a truly broken anything. It's all usually just dirty or in need of partial reassembly thanks to having been treated badly and jostled around far too much.

Re: PS2 Slim won't read discs
My launch PS2 barely reads disks and I know this is a longshot... But can you explain to me the process of reseating the ribbon cable? Sorry for Hi-jacking this thread btw..
