Is there a difference in VGA box quality ??

Post by vapester »

...I have a pretty huge dreamcast collection but have yet to buy a VGA box. My question is if there is a difference in quality in any form between the 3rd party boxes which are abundant on ebay and the seemingly hard to find official Sega ones. I'm finally looking forward to getting one. Also, if I bought one and tilted my computer 45 degrees to play Ikaruga and such can I damage my monitor? It's an LCD type. Any info is appreciated, thanks!

The way I found this site was by buying one of the VGA boxes that Racket sells on ebay ( and here) and I would recommend it to anybody.http://www.racketboy.com/store/dreamcas ... deo-av.htm The video and audio is very good.
My only gripe is that I almost broke one the RCA audio outs by using very good cables that held the socket too tight and almost broke it by pulling it out.
Beyond that ,if you keep that in mind you can't go wrong with one of those. :)

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

I'd be surprised if you could tell a difference.
I haven't used every brand, but I use both of my models on a regular basis on both a LCD and CRT monitor and have been very happy with them.
I don't sell stuff that I don't enjoy myself.

....ok cool, i get one of yours then. I can't believe I don't have one yet with all the other stuff some useless like the karaoke and camera. The Shenmue series must look amazing, looking forward to Rez and Cosmic Smash probably the most right now. As for damaging a computer monitor by tilting it, is that just a gamble on my own part ???

Oh yeah, the rotating question. An LCD should be fine as long as you have it held in place well. A CRT (big fat monitors) might have problems though.

My Dell LCD is actually designed to be rotated as it swivels and everything :)

as long as you dont leave the crt sideways for too long it should be fine. Ive done that for years, a couple hours on the side then a couple days normal. Sure that is overkill but I am using the same monitor ten years down the road.

What is recommended for the best picture quality from a Saturn on a 42 inch LCD HDTV?And how much would it cost?Would it be a major difference vs. Composite Cables? My Saturn looks like crap on it :(

I tried playing Ikaruga on one of those swivel ones, and it was quite a shock when I noticed:
a) the LCD only rotates one way
b) it's the opposite way of Ikaruga's vertical mode, and there's no way to swap inside the software

So the the OP, check if it swivels both ways :) Although you can always put it upside down as long as you securely fasten it.

I am perfectly happy with the VGA box I got from racketboy. Looks great on my tated CRT. If you look closely you can see what i believe are black scanlines.
Like this:

I suppose this is because of how the picture is displayed interlaced on a normal TV?

Mine's the same way, actually. I got a excited until I actually tried it with Ikaruga.
Oh well.
