My first GameBoy mod :)

Post by bad4brain »

Just wanted to show off my first painted GameBoy :)
It's spring green. I also fixed the broken contrast and replaced the dead speaker with a brand new one.

I used acrylic paint and a matte finish.
Next time I'm gonna sand the Game Boy before painting and I will not use as much paint ... but I'm quite happy with my first result :D

Looks pretty good sir. Did you put lots of clearcoat on it so that use won't wear the paint off around the buttons?

Yeah theres quite a lot of clearcoat on it. I'll probably use another brand next time though. The feeling could be better.

Nice work! Ive got a GBC in ugly turquoise with a bad speaker, I hope mine ends up as good, when I finally get around to it.

Thx for the feedback :)

Protip: if you get a new speaker for your gameboy be sure to get one with the right specs.
For Game Boy Classic its an 8 ohm speaker (I paid about 1,50€). The one i got was about 2 Millimeter to high for the case so i had to cut some plastic away to make it fit.

Looks great! Brought another point. Does the larger speaker sound better and louder?

I did the same to an Educator 64; a larger speaker. It did help in volume and sound quality.

The sound is a bit louder and clearer.

But there is not much difference, because the speaker has the same specs as the original and there is no additional amplification.

What really makes a difference is how the speaker is mounted.
The tighter the fit the louder the sound.
