yes i have played a lil bit of it on emulation but never beating it. Seems like typical RPG nothing to crazy. Just comparing what i seen so far of Earthbound to Secret of Mana or FF3 , it seems its would be as good as any of them.
So anybody know y this game is so revere by many, own by few?
Mainly because it's a parody of Dragon Quest type games, down to the same menu style. That, and it's unique in that you have a modern setting instead of fantasy, sci-fi, or post apocalyptic wasteland. The setting makes you feel nostalgic even if you were born well after the fifties. You have a sort of B-movie sci-fi feel in the background.
Also, it does get crazy towards the end. There's a reason I refer to it as "Charlie Brown meets the Cthulhu Mythos".

Star Ocean is technically sci-fi, but every game has the cop out where they spend the whole time on a medieval world. "But it's seriously sci-fi for real guys!". The Phantasy Star series is sci-fi too. Live A Live for the SNES has seven different chapters in different settings. One is Near Future, which is a parody of Akira and Evangelion, and another is Far Future, which is a parody of Alien and actually has no combat encounters except for the boss battle.
EDIT: forgot about Front Mission, but that's more an SRPG.

It's not. I played through the game and it had nearly everything i hated about RPGs. Tedious backtracking, constant grinding (it's not so bad in this game), and it just feels slow.

It has a cult following but not many people own it because it's way too expensive. There are plenty of carts available (whenever I search on ebay,etc..) but for some reason people think its worth $100+. It might have had a small production run but I haven't looked that up. If I was going to spend over a 100 bucks on an rpg, I'd go ahead and shoot for Panzer Dragoon Saga. Also, I don't know why people like it as much as they do. It does have some charm to it but I think you're better off with the Dragon Quest games. I guess it's just not my thing...
I used to own Earthbound. In fact, I had it when it was still fairly new and sold in stores. I really don't understand why it is so revered either. It's good, but I much prefer Final Fantasy II, III, Chrono Trigger, etc.
