Shinobido: Way of the Ninja...Anyone heard of it?

Post by ReddMcKnight »

Anyone ever played a series of games called Way of the Samurai? Supposedly, Acquire, the Company that made those games made some "Way of the Ninja" games too. Well, from what little info I could get about them, two of them were released in English in PAL Regions. A PS2 Version, and a PSP Version. Well, I'd like to know more about these games. Has anyone played them? Are they anything like the Way of the Samurai games?

I haven't ever played them, as I live in the states, but I have watched some footage of one on YouTube, and I was highly disappointed we weren't getting it.

I recently aquired Japanese version of Way of the Samurai:

As for SAMURAI, I think its a given as in the case of PAL Dreamcast SHENMUE 2 to get the game in Japanese. But unfortunately the dialog is just text on the screen not actual voice overs. turns out very little voices actually heard in the game except for screams. this is no TENCHU. Bah!
If Way of the Ninja is similar, don't bother. Bujingai is a lot better.

Way of the Ninja is basically a Tenchu clone, which means stealth game. It's pretty cool

It's not like the Way of the Samurai games, which are choose your own adventure games with some beat'em up/hack and slash action. I played the first one. It was pretty cool. I don't think the games do too well with critics here, but they're always biased against games like this. These titles do better in Japan. Way of the Samurai 3 was pretty successful there and got good reviews from Famitsu

Bujingai is more of a straight up action game I think, with no choose your own adventure element. It's got a cool Wuxia film style to it though

Yeah, Way of the Samurai games tend to get ripped by critics, but then again, I don't really trust critics anyway. They don't always take to well to the niche titles I enjoy, and the Way of the Samurai series is something I've always really liked. The open ended nature of the games, the changing storylines and opposed factions, the ability to collect a large assortment of weapons and styles, it's a lot of fun for me. I like the whole "you've wandered into a town, what do you want to do" attitude to them.

Yeah, the freedom of the game was something that surprised my friend and I when we played it. We just expected a hack and slash game, though the game was quite fun in that area as well. We really enjoyed the fights in that game. We never really finished it though. I have a copy of it still. Something for me to put on my to do list. Acquire makes some cool games. Tenchu Stealth Assasins and Tenchu 2 were an addiction for me when I first played them. I think Tenchu 2 is my fave Tenchu game

I'm pretty sure the same team that made Tenchu and Tenchu 2 made Shinobido. When they lost the rights to the Tenchu series they decided to start a new series.

What's interesting is that Shinobido feels like a natural progression of the Tenchu games. The characters move faster and jump higher but the non-linearity and atmosphere of Tenchu remains. It's a really great series and the PSP game provided me with countless hours of fun when I had it. We had epic ninja death matches (6 players) over ad-hoc at my work place.

Great great games.
