CD based consoles that can play backups out of the box?

Post by Nullface »

I emulate everything cartridge based because I don't have the space for the games. I always buy disc based systems and put modchips in them or sometimes they play burned games out of the box. I'm looking for some other consoles that I may have missed growing up that play off discs that can be burned. So far what I have is a Dreamcast, Sega Saturn, Playstation, Gamecube, Wii (I only use it for emulators/homebrew). I haven't ever touched a Sega CD, TurboGrafx-16 CD or 3DO, but I want to know if they are worth buying and what other consoles are out there that are CD based and worth buying to play with the real hardware.

Sega CD, PCE-CD, and Neo Geo CD all play backups with little difficulty - no need to mod!

I've played most of the Neo Geo games on emulators. It's my favorite system but the price of the console itself really turns me away. Plus I heard the loading times are extremely bad on the CD version. I've recently been playing alot of PC Engine games on my Wii and they are really fun especially the Japanese ones, but I've never owned or heard of this system before. Is it expensive?

Here are a few of the CD machines that don't have copy protection.

Sega CD - add-on probably $30 or so, plus the cost of the Genesis. Not region free!
Turbograpx-16 CD - add-on plus system card is probably $100-150. A Duo is probably $200-400.
PC Engine CD(Japanese Turbo CD) - system plus add-on will run $150-200 plus system card. A PC Engine Duo or Duo-R is $100-300. Get one of the Duos, since they don't need a system card.
3DO - should run around $50.
PC-FX - should be about $75-100.
Neo Geo CD - probably $50-100. The loading times are not bad on most games from 1996/7 or older.

I think Breetai might be used to Japan's prices still.
