You can't really go wrong looking for the top Metal Bands of the 70's & 80's
Though more recent favorites of mine include: As I Lay Dying & Slipknot (Though I don't think they will have any new content for a while due to their bassist dying, R.I.P)
Also, August Burns Red.
Though, If you would like to check out a bit of the Southern taste of metal, try Maylene & The Sons of Disaster. (Especially III)

Not much activity in this thread of late. I must say, I am digging symphonic metal bands again lately. I've just recently checked out Delain's April Rain and it kicks ass! Nice to hear the awesome Marco Hietala on two of their songs too. Great, great voice on him as any Nightwish fan knows

Iron Maiden, without a shadow of a doubt my favourite metal band of all time - I love all varieties of metal though, I'll listen to anything from NWOBHM to Black Metal and everything in between. Also a big fan of Down and Opeth - I'm not that fond of Opeth's recent output (Still Life, ftw!), but they're great live, and that's why I love Down too - I've seen them 4 times now, and they've been fantastic each and every time.
