Trick or Treat! JT's free Halloween gamer grab bag

Post by J T »

It's almost Halloween time, so what better time to play spooky videogames!

So stick out your bags and get ready for this treat of free scary games!

Amnesia: The Dark Descent (demo)
http://www.amnesiagame.com/#demo
Hands down, THE absolute scariest game I have ever played. Try the demo if you're not willing to buy it just on my word, but if you're thinking about buying it, trust me, it's worth it.

System Shock: Portable
http://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=211.0
I'm not sure about the legality of this one, but someone has updated System Shock so you can play it and play it for free. There are few things scarier than an artificial intelligence that feels nothing and is set on killing you. Fear SHODAN!

The Marionette
http://themarionette.game-host.org/
For those of you that love a dark & creepy point & click adventure, this one is lovingly hand crafted by a small group of indie developers.

The Suffering: Ties That Bind
http://steamunpowered.eu/free-games-spo ... air-force/
This one is free courtesy of the US air force. I'm not exactly sure why. Perhaps they are looking to recruit people that are on a blood thirsty killing spree in an insane asylum to go fight the wars.

Alien Swarm

Those pesky aliens. Always killing humans and ripping their faces off. At least they explode real nice when you shoot them.

The Graveyard
http://tale-of-tales.com/TheGraveyard/index.html
This one is more morose and than frightening I suppose, but there's still something very Halloweenish about contemplating your own mortality. This is just the demo, but the only difference between the demo and the full length version is that you sometimes die in the full length version.

F.E.A.R. Combat
http://projectorigin.warnerbros.com/fearcombat/main
This game is not as scary as the title would lead you to believe, but that doesn't stop it from being good fun. Only the multiplayer is free though.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Keep believin' in the Great Pumpkin.

Nice! Thanks for the links JT! I don't know what it is, but I'm really into Halloween this year, so this is awesome IMO.

None of those games are quite my thing but great idea, JT!
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I'd have to agree on Amnesia, JT. Headphones with decent soundstage + lights out = mad scary

I'm glad to see someone else is playing this. Isn't it fantastic?

The game is so freaky. I love that you never really get much of a chance to see the creatures hunting you. It makes your mind go crazy because you want to see what the hell they are, but you have to run or you are screwed. I especially like that you are not supposed to look at them when you are hiding. It's absolutely terrifying to be curled up in a dark corner just waiting and hoping that the thing walks away and never finds you and eats you alive.

Isn't System Shock Portable supposed to be simple to run? I've downloaded it once before and whenever I've tried to run it, it would load then just freeze to black, leaving me to do nothing but reboot my computer.

Anyways, thanks for this list JT. I'm gonna be playing The Marionette, and I'll get to whatever games I can run later.
