My current setup is as follows:
CRT Monitor, with the following hooked up to it via a composite to vga box:
N64
Gamecube
PS2
Xbox
Dreamcast
Cheap little CRT tv with the following hooked up via composite:
NES
SNES
FC Twin (For dodgy games and imports)
Now, obviously, this is very inefficient, and wastes a ton of space, I was originally going to have everything hooked up via the Composite to VGA Box, but it cannot handle 240p, so I had to buy an old little tv for the NES, SNES, and FC Twin,
Also, I have svideo cables for some of these consoles, and a component cable for my xbox, I would like to make use of these and get a better picture, my question is:
Would I be better off buying a more expensive TV Tuner with composite, component and svideo that can handle 240p, or should I get some sort of "new" *read, different* TV?
For either one, does anyone have any suggestions? I really like the slim crts, but there are very few left, and they're as expensive as a low end lcd.
Thanks!
VGA Tuner or new tv?
Re: VGA Tuner or new tv?
My opinion would be to hit up your local pawn/craigslist/goodwill for a cheapo tv. A lot of people are upgrading to flat panels now, so tons of large CRTs are going on the cheap if you find one.
I just moved into a new house and needed a decent sized tv for the guest room, and I would a 32 inch CRT (read, 100+ lbs
) at good will for $25. I slapped a switch box from gamestop on it (~$10) and it easily handles all my consoles attached to it. Being an older tv, it only handles up to 720p, but thats more than enough for my retro gaming.

If you aren't having a good time, why are you playing?

Re: VGA Tuner or new tv?
I need something that can handle component, and I have yet to find a crt tv (not saying they don't exist, I know they do, I just haven't found one) with component input. I'm currently looking at some of those tuners, the only problem is, none of them have multiple inputs, as in, I could switch between consoles, and I don't want this to become a giant mess of wires and av switches, :\avrame wrote:My opinion would be to hit up your local pawn/craigslist/goodwill for a cheapo tv. Not to mention my Goodwill marks stuff way above it's actual value, they have at least 15 of the big crt tvs, every single one of them is over a hundred dollars. -_-
As for Craigslist, I am only 16, and for some reason, my dad is suddenly terrified of Craigslist (dunno why, he's used it before)
Haven't tried a pawnshop, but I'll see if there's one around.

Re: VGA Tuner or new tv?
Sorry for the double post, but does anyone know of a box that can upscale 240p to 480p? that's my biggest issue, is that my vga box hates 240p.

I don't know a lot on this subject but I do want to throw in my two cents. 1. As retro gamers we all know CRT TVs and monitors are one of the best ways to play our old games. We will discuss which CRT TV is best one day. This is the TV you should find:

2. Are you going to Magfest in January? It's such a fun convention and it's in Alexandria.

Yeah, I've been looking out for a slim crt, that would be my ideal solution.

Haha, I just read your user name and realized what it is. Amazing. Yeah, if you live in Alexandria you MUST come to Magfest: http://magfest.org/
You mention Slim CRT and Samsung has some of those but I think they're all wide screen. I'd recommend going for a 32 or 36 inch flat screen model. They really stopped making them around '06 or '07 so I'd think craigslist really is your best bet.

Yeah, finding the slim CRTs is hard enough, but the real problem is that they're rather expensive.
Re: VGA Tuner or new tv?
I have the 32" version of that exact same HD CRT. I love it, but its no slim. Almost 200 pounds of screaming HD tube.thelolotov wrote:Never heard of it, I'll definitely take a look now.Cronson wrote:I don't know a lot on this subject but I do want to throw in my two cents. 1. Yeah, the entertainment center I have is built for CRTs, so space isn't a huge issue, I actually have little preference, but both Slims and plain old HD CRTs are a bitch to find at a reasonable price.CRTGAMER wrote:I have the 32" version of that exact same HD CRT.
