Just got a Japanese PS2

Post by Flake »

Just bought a Japanese PS2 I'm looking for some recommendations of games to try and import. I've already ordered most anything that has the word 'Gundam' in the title. I'm a big fan of 2D Fighters and shmups. What else should I be looking to import?

I'm pretty sure this had been covered before, but NTSC-uk reviewed some JPN games so you might want to check it out.

That kinda helps but I was more hoping for advice or a resource specifically for Japanese exclusive games. Most of those are available at the local gamestop.

Not to sound redundant but, the Cave shooters on PS2 were JP exclusive AFAIK.
Dodonpachi Dai-Ou-Jou
Espgaluda
Mushihimesama
Ibara

And I think that's it... :?

But there are a ton of shooters that were JP exclusive, not just Cave-brand ones.

Is it the fat? HDAdvance/HDLoader. Throw in the flip lid then install all your Japanese and U.S. games without having to mod chip it. As far as Japanese only releasees, the Sega Ages are great! U.S only got the Sega Classics release. Love Virtua On.

The Treasure Sega Ages has Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier, and Dynamite Headdy on it. If you like Psikyo shmups, there's Psikyo Shooting Collection Vol 1 with Strikers 1945 I & II and Vol 2 - Sengoku Ace & Sengoku Blade.

Got a Saturn for my birthday ; was offered a Jp PS2 like new in box for $50 and who can say no to that?

When it rains it pours!

@CRT: It's a slim so I'm pretty sure any kind of HDD option is out.

@everyone, Cave shooters. Of course! Not sure why that wasn't the first thing I thought of.

Does anyone know if the Dreamcast shmups that were later ported to PS2 (think Triggerheart) are any good? I haven't been able to find any comparisons as far as coding efficiency or framerates.

For whichever title like let's say Hokuton no Ken (fist of the north star) and Sengoku Basara X, check yesasia, cheaper than ebay's second hands + free shipping!
Lots of games are rereleased as cheaper versions, good luck!
