SEGA Saturn -- simple yet elegant

I'd say that one of the criteria to be considered a "major console" would be worldwide availability. ("worldwide" meaning in terms of the gaming world - i.e. available in North America, Japan and Europe/Australia)

Then Japanese Saturn games should also be included.

I only started this thread to admire the looks of the Saturn. Adding that small article has really shown that there is a lot of love for SEGA's "bastard child". Because of everyone here, I've learned a lot more about the system which I've owned for only a couple of weeks. Thanks for keeping it civil and (for the most part) unbiased -- that why I love the racketBOY site!

I can name a bunch of Nintendo 64 games I enjoyed, but I wouldn't go so far as to declare them all "great."

I may be misinterpreting what you're saying, but are you saying my list had a few "filler" items? Not that I would be upset if that's what you're saying -- it would be a valid concern. I tried to be as objective as possible, and have even gone back and tried to compare them to industry standards via edit. Enemy Zero did not make the cut, sadly -- shame... I think it's pretty awesome myself.

Anyway, restricted to US releases, I'd say that the Saturn and Nintendo 64 are fairly evenly matched, with my preference for the Saturn most likely being based in nostalgia -- if you import, though, whether you know Japanese or not, the Saturn comes out the clear winner in my honest opinion. That's not to say that the Nintendo 64 is a BAD console -- quite the opposite. Anyway, I think we're touching on the whole point of Racketboy -- every major console is worth owning and enjoying, regardless of its age or the company which produced it.

Yeah, you misinterpreted. I wasn't saying anything on your list was bad, I was saying when asked that I have difficulty making a similar list for the Nintendo 64 (since Flake asked, I figured I'd think about it), as there are titles I enjoyed on the N64 that are sometimes regarded as terrible.

And I just so happened to be that man... more out of an incredible aptitude for focusing on anything other than homework for procrastination's sake than any delusion that I was going to be changing the world of video games as we know it by rattling off a list of nice Sega Saturn games.

They should at least try.

• Burning Rangers still holds up today with its random-generated stages.
• Today's TVs can actually handle 10-player[/] Saturn Bomberman.
• NiGHTS on the Saturn is still the best incarnation.
• Magic Knights Rayearth on the Saturn isn't for fans of the anime (which they rewrote for this alternate-world game), but for those who enjoy lighthearted fun.
• Shining the Holy Ark is actually a rare first-person console RPG (like the first Persona) that still is serviceable with plenty of animation and excellent soundtrack.
• Other than River City Ransom (EX) and Scott Pilgrim vs the World, few notable RPG-Beat'em Ups are out there in English.
• Fighters Megamix is a fast-paced 3D romp that showed how well crossovers worked before Capcom's VS series.
• For tactics and strategy on a home console, the Shining Force 3 TRILOGY (and bonus) beats most current-gen offerings.
• The closest games to Dragon Force (outside the Japanese sequel) are a rare SNES game (Ogre Battle), a rare N-Gage game (Pocket Kingdom) or ROME: Total War (PC).
• The only game IMHO that is anything close to the scale of Panzer Dragoon Saga is Skies of Arcadia. And that's only in scale.

You guys naming stand out titles for the Saturn are going to be the death of my wallet. They say ignorance is bliss...with the Sega Saturn ignorance is still having a couple of bucks left at the end of the month!

You won't regret it. I paid about $90 for the game, and it was worth every penny. In my opinion, it is the absolute best 2D RPG on the Saturn.
