What new games have lead you to older games?

Post by Bonsaibandit »

So as the subject asks, what new stuff has lead you told older stuff you didn't know existed?

Recently I was impressed by the Sengoku Basara demo and it lead me to the previous released version called Devil Kings.

Also, in previous series, I started with Final Fantasy IV and followed that with VI. This ad me to the older games, including Mystic Quest which turned out to be quite fun.

There are more examples for me, but I am interested in whatever everyone else has gone on to find after trying something newer and wondering how far back it goes.

I would say the King of Fighters series. I wasn't really into KOF back in the day, I was all about Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. Then I played KOF 2003 when it came out and I enjoyed it. Since then I have been going back and playing older KOF games. My favorite so far is KOF 98.

I can't think of any good examples as this isn't something that happens to me often. Typically, if I get into a series I'll start from the beginning or start with whichever title was the first notable one. Just like with tv, I'll rarely watch anything without starting from the first season

EDIT:I very much enjoy seeing the growth and evolution of things and experiencing things in their proper order

Soul Reaver led me to Blood Omen which I ended up enjoying even more

Although I played Metal Gear on the NES back in the day, playing Metal Gear Solid made me really want to play the proper Metal Gear 2.

That's basically all I can think of off the top of my head, although I'm sure I've done it with at least a few fighting game series - like, I'm pretty sure I played Waku Waku 7 before Galaxy Fight.

Buying an Xbox 360 led me to new experiences (read: non-Nintendo) in retro gaming. I had such a terrible experience with XBL and the system itself that I decided not to bother with 'next gen' gaming and started looking elsewhere for new gameplay. I ended up with a Dreamcast- loved it- and that has in turn led me to getting a Saturn.

Thanks Microsoft!
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Good topic. The one that immediately comes to mind (though it may not qualify) is the Sega Smash Pack collection which led me to Shining Force for the first time. I have since picked up both Shining Force and Shining Force II on original hardware.

Opposite here. Trying updated versions of older games. The Sega Ages series such as Space Harrier come to mind.
