Steel Empire for the Sega Genesis Review
Hello everyone. I've got a new review video posted. This one is for Steel Empire for the Sega Genesis. You can check it out on my new website, TheAlfredEffect.com. Enjoy!
Re: Steel Empire for the Sega Genesis Review
Instantly can I just point something out that annoyed me. Having to watch a 30 second ad, then having to watch a 30 second intro.
I understand if you want ads on your videos (Though it might be more logical to add them after you have a somewhat steady following as a lot of people get turned off them and wont sit through them if they dont know the content they are going to watch it good.) however if you decide to have ads do you really need the shows intro as well, its utter overkill when waiting to watch your review, I like supporting members content, but having to wait a minute to watch a review is a pain in the ass.
Also I find it hard to stay interested in reviews when there are large sections of just the game playing, I watch reviews to hear peoples opinions, which watching the gameplay, not to swap out every minute.
Now sorry if I sound overtly negative they were just two things that hit a nerve and better to share them so you know what people watching your vids think.

Re: Steel Empire for the Sega Genesis Review
@emwearz, I just want to thank you for being the first person who has given me some honest and specific feedback. Eight episodes now and the only suggestion I've gotten is to do short episodes as opposed to long, multi-topic shows.
I've just disabled the pre-show ads so that won't be an issue anymore. Very misleading because they say the ads can be "3-30 seconds" but it seems all of them are 30 seconds.
I will also keep in mind what you said about mixing gameplay and commentary for my next review. Would voiceovers during gameplay be an improvement or just less gameplay? I haven't tried doing a voiceover but I imagine it wouldn't be that hard with my hardware/software setup.
Guys, anymore feedback I am all ears.

In all honesty I prefer text with pics reviews. Easier to study a review without having to slug through a video.
You could even do both, a review posted here on Racketboy with a direct link to your video of the gameplay.

Re: Steel Empire for the Sega Genesis Review
I've enjoyed your reviews so far, but I do think voice over during gameplay really suits video reviews.
Re: Steel Empire for the Sega Genesis Review
Going to second CRT on this one. A lot of the time when I'm doing reviews I'm just screwing around at school or I've got something else making noise around me. Maybe you could go for a mixed approach?CRTGAMER wrote:In all honesty I prefer text with pics reviews. Easier to study a review without having to slug through a video.

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Re: Steel Empire for the Sega Genesis Review
@CRTGAMER, @flake - You know, I was thinking about doing something like that with the video at the top of the post and then a written synopsis beneath. Wasn't really sure how popular that might be so I've held off on it for now. Do you guys think a brief, 3-4 paragraph synopsis of my video review would work or should I do a full-blown in depth review with pictures, etc. Synopsis would be very easy to incorporate into my existing routine and I could probably go back and add it to past reviews, but a full-blown article will take a little more time and add to production of future reviews.
@jfe2 - Thanks man, I appreciate the kind words. I'll start including voiceovers during my gameplay. Should I do shorter gameplay segments or is 20-30 seconds a good number to shoot for? I want to make sure the viewer has a good idea of what the game is about but at the same time I don't want to bore them. Of course, just watching video of me talking may not be the most exciting thing to watch so I guess I am at a loss.
What do you guys think?

Yeah, that blended approach would probably work out very well. It would lower the commitment threshold of a potential viewer if they could get a 'preview' of your work.

Same here but I've never seen it anywhere. Heck I didn't even know there was one until I looked the game up on Wikipedia. Would be awesome for some good portable shmupping but I will let you handle the review on that one.noiseredux wrote:I want the GBA port of this.
