Re: iPad capabilities
I think if I get a tablet computer, I will get a Galaxy Tab instead of an iPad. Why? Because the Galaxy Tab has a porn button.

If your shopping for a tablet, this one seems impressive (at only half the price of the ipad):

Re: iPad capabilities
I hope nobody takes this as flamebaiting, since I am genuinely curious and just asking: but is an iPad really more comfortable than a netbook during long term usage?
Like, you're supposed to hold it in your hand while doing 5 hours of straight paperwork, while a netbook can rest on your leg or a table? If an iPad can't be comfortably used for long periods of time, would it mean that it can't replace a desktop PC whereas a netbook will be serviceable as a main PC (provided that it's only for office work and not for games)

You have to use an iPad to understand, its not a laptop replacement. Its a new device all in its own. Think as if some one told you there is a new thing called a microwave that would heat food for you, you would probably say why would I buy it if I already have an oven that would do the exact same thing?neilencio wrote:I hope nobody takes this as flamebaiting, since I am genuinely curious and just asking: but is an iPad really more comfortable than a netbook during long term usage?

You see, the iPad is not just a smaller PC, its a new appliace.
You have: TV, fridge, radio, pc, cell phone, modem, and now you have the iPad.
You must use one first to understand, take this as a rule for any new product, find a demo or someone you know with that product and test it out for yourself. I did mention earlier that I was not sure about buying ,but after I did and checking it out , I found its awesome.
a netbook is a mini laptop. But I don't understand netbooks, why would you buy a netbook and a laptop? a netbook is like a crippled laptop, and if you are carrying a netbook you might as well carry the laptop.
The iPad is more like a complimentary device for your work, its not like you will buy an iPad and forget about a PC . But I believe it can improve your productivity , as you can carry it anywhere and do a lot of stuff with it, either read articles, check your e-mail, write a memo, play, listen to audio, watch clips of videos while you are waiting for anything. Its extremely portable, its more portable than a book. Its like a magazine.

The way I see it, a smart phone is a different device. Its a phone , and you can get quick access to the internet, like blackberry. But there are certain things with the ipad that it can do better
1) gaming- due to larger screen, ipad runs both iphone and ipad games. iphone runs only iphone games
Not ALL of them, lets not forget the iphone has been out for 3 years, the ipad only 6 months or so, give it time. Plus the larger screen is a huge difference , Do you want to play your ps3 on a 13 CRT, or a 50 inch HDTV!
Resolution of iPad is only slightly larger than iPhone 4's retina screen. 1024 x 768 compared 960 x 640.kingmohd84 wrote:
2)Browsing-its much more enjoyable to browse using an ipad over iphone due to screen size.
I wasn't speaking of resolution, but do you want to view a website minimized to the palm of your hands, or through a screen that is almost the size of an a4 paper?
Reading is improved on the iPhone 4 with the books app, plus the iPhone 4 fits in my pocket. iPad doesn't.kingmohd84 wrote:
3)Reading-I didn't buy ipad for this but I am amazed how well it works. Reading on my ipad, even blogs and articles, are much better than reading on my laptop, due to ipad's book like design
You are correct about the fitting in your pocket thing, but again, do you want to read in a 4 inch screen?
Incorrect, the iPad utilises a 4:3 aspect ratio. The iPhone uses a 3:2 ratio which will mean that the letterbox is smaller, not ideal but I know I'd go for less letter boxing rather than cutting the edges of the video off.kingmohd84 wrote:
4)Video-I am not sure if any one would watch full movies on ipad or ipod, but either way the ipad s better again to due larger screen size be it youtube or The Godfather.
Regarding the picture showing Star Trek working fine on the iPad, it was photoshopped to make it appear fine, they nudged the actors closer together to get the impression of a widescreen image. If you put the same scene on an iPad it would cut half of Spock's face off.
so because the ratio, you rather watch a video on the small screen than on the bigger screen? We are not talking about 1 inch in difference. The ipad is like 2.5x the screen size of the iphone/ipod touch. Thats the difference between 20 inch pc monitor and 50 inch screen!
I'll give you this one, but the creativity software available for IOS isn't exactly stellar. It still boggles my mind as to why they didn't just put OS X on it. I just can't understand Apple's logic in this completely dumb decision.kingmohd84 wrote:
5) Almost any creativity or creation software(any software you use to produce output like photo-editing , word processing, etc) is better again because the larger screen gives you more space to work. Think of photoshop used on a 13 inch scren, then compare it to a 30 inch screen.
There is no use for a non-OSX iPad, at all. It just shouldn't exist as a product. You might as well get an iPod Touch if you don't want the phone side of the device.kingmohd84 wrote:
again, iphone/smart phone , is designed for quick access when necessary. iPad makes the actually experience enjoyable.
sure the iphone is more portable, but the only place i think i can't take my ipad with me is to the supermarket or to a fancy restaurant. Otherwise, in the car, in a coffee shop, on bed, even in the toilet its just as portable.
The thing that is better with a smart phone over an ipad is audio. You will look stupid carrying an ipad with ear plugs and listening to music. Reminds me of the 80's when people used to carry the boom box over their shoulders to listen to music. It just doesn't work, especially on the go. Unless you make a mount for it in the car or the room you are using it in,
I can see what you mean, but the bigger screen makes a huge difference, I can't emphasize this enough. And it works, just like you I thought this is just a huge ipod. Looks like the huge iPod is much more convenient, trust me ipod touch was a cheaper option for me and I am glad i didn't pick it up
but I wold be happy if they can insert os X into this in the future, without decreasing the battery life, because the battery life on this thing is one of the most important features of this device, unless you do it purposely, its hard to kill a full charge in one day.

Doesn't matter, the iPad isn't going to get many exclusive games, if any. They're all going to be iPhone/iTouch ports since that is the most common device among IOS.

Doesn't make any difference the DPI is high enough to fit the entire page on the screen. When I want to browse the internet when I'm out and about, the iPhone 4 is more than adequate.

Again, doesn't matter due to the high DPI.

No I'm saying I wouldn't want to watch a video at all on either device. You don't understand how DPI works. The size may be 2.5x in physical size, but the resolution is not. So your comparison between a 20 inch monitor and a 50 inch screen is non-analogous. It's more like 1.28x.

Unfortunately, as it uses ARM rather than an x86 derivative, unless some crazy/mad genius fancies porting a closed source kernel to ARM it is never going to happen.

I think the idea of a Netbook as in the iPad size, is an in between screen size of the cellphone and a laptop.kingmohd84 wrote:You have to use an iPad to understand, its not a laptop replacement. A more portable browser-reader then the sometimes cumbersome to carry laptop, a tradeoff of smaller keys and screen.
There are Netbooks that spin fold into a tablet with touchscreen.
But to answer neilencio, no you don't have to hold the iPad constantly. You can set the iPad on your lap or table.
A shame iPad didn't include OSX but went the iPhone APS route.
