Game Boy Pitch Mod Question

Yesterday I tried building a mod that let's you alter the cpu speed of your game boy, so you can change the pitch of the sound on the fly.

I didn't buy their kit though, but got the needed parts sepparately.
My problem is, that the part LTC1799 (it's kind of a variable oscillator that is
meant to control the cpu speed of the modded Game Boy) is really really tiny.

In fact so tiny that I broke it trying to solder the wires to it ^^
Now I know why someone would even bother to buy the kit ...

My Question is: Does anyone know a similar part that ist bigger and easier to handle?

It looks like a surface mount component. They are very difficult for even experienced solderers to do correctly without the right equipment. You're not supposed to just solder wires to them. They're designed to be soldered directly on to a PCB. Hence the name.

Yeah so I'm not as bad at soldering as I thought ^^
I even manged to solder two wires to the SMC before I broke it
And the tip of my soldering iron is bigger than the the SMC itself ...

I just found out that there are adapters for SMCs: http://bit.ly/13xNWD
Maybe it makes it a bit easier to solder the component.

You'll still have to solder the component to the DIP but it just means that it's easier to resolder/desolder the DIP to new projects. They're used for prototyping mostly. It does mean that you will be able to use the drag method to solder the SMC to the DIP, which is the easiest method of soldering SMCs.



It's a TSOP but it's the same principle.

The parts need to be clean, which flux helps with. But the flux also helps with the melting and spreading of the solder. Watch this video too.
