How strong is this lineup of portable megadrive games?

Post by migo »

I'm looking at getting the AtGames Portable Megadrive, and these are the games it has. I've checked them all out on Youtube, but there's only so much you can gather from watching videos.
  • Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
    Alien Force
    Altered Beast
    Arrow Flash
    Columns III
    Crack Down
    Decap Attack
    Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
    Ecco
    Ecco Jr.
E-SWAT: Cyber Police City Under Siege
    Flicky
    Gain Ground
    Golden Axe
    Jewel Master
    Kid Chameleon
    Ristar
    Sonic and Knuckles
Shadow Dancer - Secret of Shinobi
    The Revenge of Shinobi
I'm also wondering how many of them would end up really sucking on a 2.4" screen. It's obvious Crack Down will, with the action being in 1/4 of the screen, and looks like Ristar, Sonic & Knuckles and Ecco will be alright since they also have game gear versions (except maybe S&K?), but the rest I'm not so sure about. A lot of them seem to be arcade ports which makes me wonder about their viability on a handheld.

Sonic % Knuckles sucks without Sonic3 attached!

Jewel Master might turn out to be annoying on a small screen with the text and the sort.

Decap Attack is just amazing all around

and revenge of shinobi might turn out to be hard in teeny weeny, eye strain-o-vision.

Decap Attack was panned when it was new, I never understood why. It is a great little game and one of the few platformers I've actually completed.

I don't know what that port/Gen is going for but if it's $30 or less, there's enough good stuff to play IMO.

It's going for $40, shipping is $7 and I can get a $5 off coupon. So total it'll cost me $42, maybe ~$50 if I get hit with customs.

Well for $50... Hmm. These would be the ones I'd play;

Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
Columns III
Decap Attack
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
Ecco
Golden Axe
Kid Chameleon
Ristar
Sonic and Knuckles
Shadow Dancer - Secret of Shinobi
The Revenge of Shinobi

So 11 games but not all of them are long-play games but for about $5 a game... Why not get a PSP, mod it, and use ROMS? I know it's more expensive at first but at least you won't be limited game-wise or too much system-wise.

I've worn out being able to play games on my cell phone, and my GBC doesn't have a backlight. I've got a 2 hour daily commute, so a game system with backlight is about the only thing to stay occupied. I don't have a huge amount of money to burn right now, but I'll have more later. I'm also still debating between the DS, PSP and GP2X, so this is a good temporary system.

Sounds like a solid plan ;)
